Los Angeles Coliseum Facts and Information
The Los Angeles Coliseum has stood in the heart of Los Angeles since May 1, 1923. It holds 93,607 fans today, and while it has undergone many changes in which team it hosts, it started with hosting the USC Trojans, and has ended with hosting the USC Trojans.
So stoic and regal is this facility, it has not once but twice been host to the Olympic Games; once in 1932 and again in 1984. It is the only Olympic Arena to have also hosted the Super Bowl and a World Series. So rich is its contribution to Los Angeles 's Sports History, that the day before the 1984 Olympics kicked off, it was dubbed a Historic Landmark on July 27 th of that year.
Earlier in 2008, the Dodgers and the Red Sox celebrated their own 50 th anniversary and with the help of Manny Ramirez, set an MLB Record for attendance, at 115,300 fans.
Because of its status as a historic landmark, it is unlikely that the Coliseum will be upgraded to host a professional NFL team as well; in 2002 the poor renovations of Soldier's Field resulted in that particular field being stripped of its Historic Landmark status. The Coliseum was not designed for today's professional football fans who are accustomed to luxury boxes, suites, and clubhouses, and as a result, the Coliseum would need to undergo some expensive renovations as well as making sure it does not make any changes that would compromise its standing as a historic landmark.
The Coliseum is host to an exciting number of events outside of the USC Football arena. Musical history has been made time and again, with the likes of Black Sabbath, Van Halen, Bruce Springsteen, The Who, Pink Floyd, The Rolling Stones, The Grateful Dead, and U2 gracing its stages.
