John Anson Ford Amphitheatre
As one of the oldest venues in Los Angeles , the John Anson Ford Amphitheatre originally opened in 1920 as the Pilgrimage Theatre. After a massive fire destroyed the building in 1929, in 1931 the amphitheatre was re-introduced as a concrete structure made to withstand another fire. From 1941 until 1960, the amphitheatre was used for the sole purpose of performing Wehterill Stevenson's play about the life of Jesus, minus a brief interlude while WWII took place.
A lawsuit in 1964 accusing Los Angeles County of breaking rules by holding an exclusively-religious performance saw an end to the play about Jesus and the Pilgrimage Play all together. In 1976 the theatre was re-named for former County Supervisor John Anson Ford, a known avid supporter of the performance and creative arts in Los Angeles .
Today the Los Angeles County Arts Commission is responsible for the 1,421 seat outdoor theatre. They renovated it in 2000, adding beautiful dining patios, wheelchair accessible ramps, and a gorgeous waterfall fountain. During the summer season, from May to October, the Ford Amphitheatre holds theatre productions, dance performances and festivals, and a wide variety of world music.
The 87-seat indoor theatre is used during the off-season and hosts dramatic performances, movies, as well as year-round film festivals.
