Sheryl Crow Biography

The Singer, pianist and guitarist, Sheryl Suzanne Crow, was born on February 11, 1962, in Kennett, Missouri, to Wendell and Bernice Crow. Sheryl Crow has two older sisters, Kathy and Karen, and a single younger brother, Steve. Sheryl Crow began playing piano at age six. Sheryl Crow graduated from Kennett High School in 1980 and the University of Missouri at Columbia in 1984, where Sheryl Crow majored in music education. Throughout college, Sheryl Crow spent her weekends performing with a local band, Cashmere.

After college, Sheryl Crow worked as a music teacher in an elementary school in St. Louis previous to moving to Los Angeles in 1986. Sheryl Crow began recording jingles for publicity clients, including McDonald’s, and worked as a back-up singer. In 1987-88 Sheryl Crow sang on Michael Jackson’s “Bad” world tour. Sheryl Crow later sang back-up for Sting, Rod Stewart and Don Henley. In 1991 Sheryl Crow recorded an album for A&M Records which she shelved because it sounded too “slick.” Sheryl Crow began playing with the band The Tuesday Music Club, comprised of Bill Bottrell, David Baerwald, David Ricketts, and Sheryl’s then-boyfriend Kevin Gilbert. In 1993 the group released the multi-platinum album Tuesday Night Music Club which included the smash hit, “All I Wanna Do.”

In 1995, Sheryl Crow won three Grammy Awards for Best New Artist, Record of the Year (for “All I Want to Do”), and Best Female Pop Vocal Performance for Tuesday Music Club. Sheryl Crow also performed a MTV Unplugged session in 1995. Sheryl Crow released the album Sheryl Crow in 1996, winning two Grammy Awards for Best Rock Album and most excellent Female Rock Vocal Performance. Sheryl Crow spent much of 1997-98 on tour, playing select dates on the Rolling Stones’ Bridges to Babylon tour and performing at the 1998 Lilith Fair concerts. Sheryl Crow released her third album The Globe Sessions in the fall of 1998, which won a Grammy for Best Rock Album. Throughout 1999, Sheryl Crow performed in Europe and toured with Lilith Fair throughout the United States. At the Grammy Awards in February 2000, Sheryl Crow won for top Female Rock Vocal Performance, for her rendition of the Guns 'n Roses hit "Sweet Child o'Mine."

Sheryl Crow's fresh, updated spin on classic roots rock made her one of the mainly popular mainstream rockers of the '90s. Her albums were loose and eclectic on the surface, yet were usually tied together by polished, professional song craft. Crow's sunny, good-time rockers and world-weary ballads were radio staples for a lot of the '90s, and Sheryl Crow was a perennial favorite at Grammy time. Although her songwriting style was firmly anchored to the rock tradition, she wasn't a slave to it -- her free-associative, reference-laden poetry could hardly have been the product of any era but the '90s. Her making not only kept pace with contemporary trends, but sometimes even pushed the cover of what sounds could be heard on a classicist rock album, especially on her self-titled sophomore effort. All of this made Sheryl Crow one of the most dependable stars of the decade, and Sheryl Crow showed no signs of relinquishing her hard-won success in the new millennium.
