The Playboy Enterprise sponsors this festival each and every year. The very first festival was in 1959 and was held at Chicago Stadium. Now, it takes place in Los Angeles at the Hollywood Bowl. The move took place in 1979. The emcee of events for most of the time in LA has been Bill Cosby. This festival is always held in June, usually mid-month. It is a gathering of local and upcoming musicians in the Jazz genre. Several well-known and established musicians also make appearances and perform.

2013 Playboy Jazz Festival?
The 2013 Playboy Jazz will have George Lopez as the Master of Cermonies.

The Saturday show will include Pedrito Martinez Group, Gregory Porter, Gordon Goodwin's Big Phat Band, Herbie Hancock with Naturally 7, George Duke with Jeffry Osborne. The show runs from 3pm to 7pm.

The Sunday show will have Sheila E, Bob James/David Sanborn, India.Arie,The Clayton-Hamilton Jazz Orchestra Celebrates Quincy Jones’ 80th Birthday, Taj Mahal and the Real Thing Tuba Band as well as more preformers and will run from 3:00pm to 10:30pm.

Play Boy Jazz Festival
In 2013, it celebrates 35 years of this event taking place. George Lopez will be the Master of Ceremonies. The event takes place on June 15 and 16, 2013 and begins at 3pm. Not only are you able to attend the festival in person but if you are unable, you can listen to it live on KKJZ radio. The event this year also features Naturally 7 with Herbie Hancock, Gregory Porter, and the LA County high school arts Jazz ensemble.

A Little History on Jazz Music Itself
Jazz music came about early in the 20th Century. It was founded in the southern states of the US and was predominantly performed by black Americans. In the beginning, it was a mixture of African American, European and blues. It was not until the 1930s and 1940s that Jazz became popular. It is a genre of music that gets people moving and out on the dance floor. In times of trouble and tragedy, it is feel good music that helps a dark situation seem a bit brighter. Jazz has developed over the last several decades into mini-genres which include bebop, soul jazz, Jazz fusion, Jazz funk, and several others that are still being developed.
