The Beach Boys were started by Brian Wilson and his brothers Dennis and Carl in their home in Hawthorne , CA . At the time Wilson became obsessed with his fathers piano playing and a popular harmony group called The Four Freshman. He taught his brother harmonies that he taught himself by ear and soon they were practicing nightly. They used a reel-to-reel taoe recorder where Wilson learned how to overdub. He began more elaborate recordings that involved his mother, cousins, and friends. Thought he failed piano his senior year, he submitted an original composition called “Surfin'”. It wasn't long before Surfin' reached the radio for airplay in the fall of 1961. It was a hit on the west coast and reached No. 75 on the national pop charts. Though their manager didn't like their fist song, it was enough to book them at the New Years Eve Richie Valens Memorial Dance in Long Beach, CA; an event headlined by Ike and Tina Turner.
The Beach Boys were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1988. They were chosen for the Vocal Group Hall of Fame in 1998. In 2001 the Beach Boys earned a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Awards. Founding member Brian Wilson was inducted into the UK Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2006. The Beach Boys have been a steady present on multiple “greatest” lists, including Rolling Stones 100 Greatest Artists of All Time. The Beach Boys are also inductees into the Hit Parade Hall of Fame. Several of their albums have been listed as the Greatest Album of All Time. The home that the original Beach Boys grew up in was demolished in 1986 but is marked as a Beach Boys Historical Landmark.
To date the Beach Boys have released thirty-one albums, their most recent of which is still in the works. They hadn't released an album from 1996 until 2011. Brian Wilson had stopped performing with the band live in 1966 and became a producer and writer for the band.
