Greek Theater Facts And Information:
The Greek Theatre Los Angeles is located in the heart of Los Angeles ' 4,210 acres of Griffith Park . Griffith Park 's Greek Theater is second in size in California only to San Diego 's Mission Trails Preserve. The famous Greek Theatre culminated on September 29, 1929 after mining philanthropist Griffith Jenkins Griffith donated 3,015 of those acres as well as the funding to complete not only the Los Angeles Greek Theater, but also the Griffith Observatory. With a rather limited seating available of 5,700-5,800 seats available, the Greek Theatre almost always sells out.
Modeled after the influence of an ancient Greek temple, the stage was built in an amphitheater fashion. This has probably lent to the theaters success as it was built in a time where technology was not available to ante up the sound quality. Shows in the earliest days of the Greek Theater had only its timeless design to rely upon.
Anyone lucky enough to get a hold of Greek Theatre tickets appreciates well the intimate setting, sitting between the hills and trees of Griffith Park . At night, far away from the city lights, stars shine overhead the Greek Theater amphitheater stage without fail. Summer nights are warm and tepid and carry the smell of trees. In the fall, the weather grows cool as leaves turn in color and gentle breezes blow across the Greek Theater seating. So appreciated is the uniqueness and history of the Greek Theater, that seven years in the last decade it's earned the title of Best Small Outdoor Venue by Pollstar Magazine.
Today the Greek Theatre is owned by Los Angeles , and the Nederlander-Greek Inc. is responsible for it's management, promotions, and operations. Now it is used for concerts, stage shows, and many other events.
