Metallica Biography
Metallica is one of the longest standing heavy metal bands still active today. Founded in 1981, this year marks their 30 th anniversary as a band. Lars Ulrich posted an ad in a local newspaper to which James Hetfield responded. The two are the original founding members. Kirk Hammet is another longstanding member; joining in 1983 as a lead guitar and backing vocals. Robert Trujillo has been on bass and a backing vocalist since 2003. Former members include Ron McGovney on bass just during 192, Dave Mustaine on lead guitar from 82' to 83', Cliff Burton on bass from 82'-86' and Jason Newsted on bass from 1986 to 2001. Cliff Burton famously died at the age of 24 when the tour bus slipped on supposed black ice in Sweden following a huge performance in Stockholm . He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame posthumously with the rest of Metallica on April 4, 2009.

Metallica is considered one of the most influential heavy metal bands in music history and is considered one of the “big four” heavy metal bands of the 80's, along with Slayer, Anthrax, and Megadeth.
