Foo Fighters Biography:
The Foo Fighters were formed in 1994 by former Nirvana drummer, Dave Grohl. Initially Foo Fighters was just a one-man project. The name is catchy with a unique background- “foo fighters” were the names for the WWII pilots who reported UFO sightings. Not long after the start of his “band”, Grohl recruited the talents of Nate Mendel on bass and William Goldsmith on drums; both members were previously with a band called Sunny Day Real Estate. Fellow Nirvana band mate Pat Smear also joined the band on guitar.
During the recording of the second album, both Goldsmith and Smear quit the band. The band went through several more lineup changes that year, bringing in Taylor Hawkins and then bringing in and letting go of Franz Stahl.
In their early years the Foo Fighters were often compared to the sound of Nirvana. Grohl admits that the late Kurt Cobain, singer/songwriter of Nirvana, was an enormous influence in his musical stylings. Early on Grohl wrote and composed everything by himself. With the growth of band members, they too began contributing to the song writing process.
To date the Foo Fighters have released seven albums. Their most recent album, Wasting Album, was released 2011.
