Dodgers Vs Phillies History:
Over the thirty-five years the Philadelphia Phillies and Los Angeles Dodgers have played many competitive series, both during the regular season and the postseason. The two clubs have met in the postseason on five different occasions since 1977, with the Phillies prevailing in the last three, all over the past decade. During the first three-quarters of the past century the two clubs did not meet in the postseason, but competed directly for the NL pennant for many years prior to baseball going to the divisional playoffs in 1969. In the late 1977 and 1978 the Dodgers defeated the Phillies in consecutive years to earn the right to go on to the World Series versus the Yankees. These late 1970's Philly teams included greats Pete Rose, Mike Schmidt, Steve Carlton, Jim Kaat and Tug McGraw. In 1977 the Phillies won a 101 and games only to lose to the Dodgers. The Dodgers teams of the late 1970's, managed by Tommy Lasorda, featured the likes of Steve Garvey, Ron Cey, Don Baylor, Reggie Smith, Don Sutton, Burt Hooten and Tommy John. The combination of pitching and power the Dodgers featured were just too much for the Phillies staff to handle.
The Phillies enacted a bit of revenge on the Dodgers in 1983 by defeating them three games to one in the NL Championship series to advance to the World Series to take on the Baltimore Orioles. The Phillies would go on to lose the World Series to the Orioles and rookie shortstop Cal Ripken. During the great run of Phillies teams from the late 1970's to mid 1980's the Phillies would win only one World Series (1980) largely due to multiple postseason losses to the Dodgers.
Dodgers and Phillies postseason rivalry has picked up again in the past decade with the teams playing two more playoff series all won by Philadelphia. Most recently in 2008 and 2009 the Phillies defeated the Dodgers in the National League Championship Series.
