Dodgers Vs Padres
It's been a tough couple of seasons for the San Diego Padres who have been in rebuilding mode for the past few seasons. They're a well-managed club under the tutelage of Bud Black but the ongoing question has been whether or not they can consistently produce runs. While the Padres have once again amassed a solid collection of top tier starters they once again have the look of a team that's lacking in the offensive production department.
The Padres boast a starting rotation that has elite potential. Both Andrew Cashner and Tyson Ross had breakout seasons last year, giving San Diego a solid young rotation combination. Ian Kennedy, acquired from the Diamondbacks should improve on a down season a year ago. The big wild card for the Padres is the presence of Josh Johnson, one of the more talented right-handers in the game but a player who's dealt with injuries throughout his career. If Johson, seemingly healthy, can regain the form he's shown in the past the Padres may have a rotation that allows them to contend.
Offensively the key for the Padres is production from Chase Headley. After a 31 home run seasons two years ago Headley had a subpar season in 2013, with his power numbers cut in half. Headley is heading into a contract season and the Padres clearly need their third baseman to produce. Second baseman Jedd Gyorko had a breakout season last year, with 23 home runs, and gives the Padres a building block. San Diego has solid outfield depth, but enters the season with Cameron Maybin and Carlos Quentin both battling injury concerns.
