The Cerritos Center for the Performing Arts:

Over 154,000 square feet, the Cerritos Center is an entertainment and music venue located in the Cerritos Towne Center of Cerritos, California. Owned and operated by the City of Cerritos , it opened its doors to the public on January 9, 1993. It hosts opera, cabaret, jazz, dance, magic, drama, musicals and comedy performances as well as private functions. The Cerritos Center season runs from August to May.

Plans for the construction of the Cerritos Center of the Performing Arts had been proposed in the Cerritos Towne Center since 1986. The debate, however, as to the size and influence of the theater compared to other venues in Southern California grew. Mainly, there were fears that with such a large theater there might not be enough patrons to fill it. However, consultants from the Theatre Projects Consultants of London quelled all their fears and inspired city leaders with the building plans of the Derngate Theatre in Northampton , England , where blocks of seats on rollers could be rearranged or removed completely, customized to each performance. At the time, nothing like it even existed in the United States . Architects Barton Myers Associates of Los Angeles were hired to design a similar theater for Cerritos . In 1987, the design plans included an auditorium with six distinct seating configurations, a 5,100 square-foot conference center and a 200 seat theater with its own sound and lighting systems. Construction shortly began and included glass walls, pink limestone, colorful ceramic tiles and angular points and projections. A glass elevator tower topped with pyramids, thin spires and pennants completed the final façade. The luxury doesn't stop there - the interior includes a lobby featuring a curved grand staircase with etched glass, stylish fireplace, soaring ceiling and artwork. It was initially budgeted at $17 million for the development; the final price tag came out to be over $60 million.

Opening night, which was sold out, welcomed Frank Sinatra. He performed for three nights and helped establish the Cerritos Center as a premier venue in the Southern California .
