Praised by critics and the public alike, & Honored by the National Endowment for the Arts for its artistic achievement the Santa Barbara Symphony became Santa Barbara's the most popular classical music series, based on the number of subscribers & concertgoers attending the Orchestra's programs each year.

The Santa Barbara Symphony was founded back in 1953 by musicians who came together to perform symphonic literature. The 1rst conductor was Adolph Franzen, a very distinguished Belgian cellist who resided in the city of Santa Barbara.

In the fall of 1994, renowned conductor Gisèle Ben Dor assumed the responsibilities of Music Director, by unanimous request of the audiences, musicians, & board. Later Varujan Kojian became its musical director in 1985, bringing a period of unparalleled artistic achievement. Yehudi Menuhin, André Watts, & Itzhak Perlman are among the many internationally recognized musicians who have appeared with the Orchestra.
 
From the beginning, the Orchestra has grown into a Professional ensemble of 90+ musicians. The Santa Barbara Symphony musicians' admiration & esteem for their conductor, & his for them, became apparent at every single performance. Together they brought a magical excitement to their music making.
