Angels Vs Rangers
After decades of futility the Texas Rangers have become one of the most well run and successful franchises in all of baseball over the past five years, and the toughest divisional foes for the Angels in the AL West year-in and year-out. The Rangers turnaround is similar to the blueprint used by the Angels in the early part of the last decade, a solid farm system that developed a handful of young stars merged with a very good manager. Following a dominant Angels run from 2004 to 2009, with five division titles in six years, the Rangers have become the team to beat in the AL West. Short of an actual World Series title the Rangers have had a good a run as any team in baseball over the past four seasons. Moving to stem the rise of the Rangers, the Angels have attempted to build their club by subtracting from the Rangers with the acquisitions of CJ Wilson and Josh Hamilton.
With Hamilton moving from Arlington to Anaheim the rivalry has taken on a new twist. Hamilton's exit from Texas didn't go smoothly and his presence has clearly added some intrigue to the matchup. With eighteen head-to-head matchups per season the Rangers/Angels rivalry will only grow more intense with Hamilton now an Angel. Heading into the 2013 season the all-time record between the two clubs was incredibly close. With 805 total games played the Angels have a 412-393 victory advantage. Since 2009 the series has tilted a bit towards the Rangers, who hold a 46-36 advantage in 82 games played since the start of the 2009 season.
With a talented Angels roster and an always competitive Rangers team any series between the Rangers and Angels is a big ticket for Southern California baseball fans. In order to make their first playoff run since 2009 the Angels will have to knock off the Rangers for supremacy in the AL West.
Many of the stars that made up the two Rangers World Series title teams have moved on to other clubs or retirement, but the Texas roster is still full of savvy veterans and an elite pitching staff. The rejuvenated Rangers farm system has shown the ability to produce major league contributors over the past couple of years and that pattern should continue into the foreseeable future.
