The large venue of Walt Disney Concert Hall was designed by a famous award-winning architect based in Los Angeles, California, named Frank Gehry. He was the designer of world-class structures like Ontario, Gehry Residence, Weisman Art Museum, and Dancing House. His awards and achievements include Pritzker Prize, National Medal of Arts, AIA Gold Medal, Order of Canada, Kiesler Prize for Architecture and the Arts, and many more. The Walt Disney Concert Hall project was originally planned in the year 1987, During this year, the late Lillian Disney, widow of Walt Disney (co-founder of Walt Disney Company, twenty-two time Academy Award-winning American film producer, director, screenwriter, voice actor, animator, entrepreneur, visionary and philanthropist), asked Frank Gehry to make a design of a concert hall that will be named after her late husband Walt Disney. She donated with it a stunning 50 million dollars. In the year 1991, Frank Gehry completed the design and gave it to Lillian Disney. In the following year, the construction of an underground parking garage was started. However, because of lack in funds, the construction slowed down. It was only in the year 1996 when the construction of the garage ended. It was said that it had cost stunning amount of money that averages from 90 million to 110 million dollars. The money used in the garage was provided by the Los Angeles County. The construction of the Walt Disney Concert Hall itself, due to lack of funds, also slowed down in the years of 1994 to 1996. Because of this, the original design of the construction had to be changed and revised in order to save money. However, because of the help of private donations, the Disney families, and Walt Disney Company itself, in the year 2003, the Walt Disney Concert Hall was finally finished.
After the construction of the Walt Disney Concert Hall, another additional expense was needed to fix the problem caused by polished concave stainless steel surfaces. The stainless steel surfaces was said to cause discomfort to their immediate neighbors. Residents of the nearby condominiums were being affected by the sunlight reflected in the stainless steel surfaces. The stainless steel surfaces of the Walt Disney Concert Hall also created heat, giving discomfort to the neighbors. After many complaints heard from the other buildings’ residents, the county government asked Disney to find a solution. After many studies, they came up with the idea of sanding the parts of offending surfaces to reduce the glare.
In the year 2004, the large concert organ inside the Walt Disney Concert Hall was completed. This large concert organ was used in many concerts held in the place. For over 4 years of its erection, Walt Disney Concert Hall became a venue for many entertaining shows. It has already entertained not only the people of Los Angeles but visitors as well. It became not only a home for the Los Angeles Philharmonic orchestra, it also became a home for many music lovers in Los Angeles and around the globe.
