Royce Hall Facts and Information

Royce Hall is one of the best concert venues and one of the first four original building structures inside the Westwood campus of the University of California, Los Angeles or UCLA. The Royce Hall was designed in a distinctive Italian Romanesque Revival style. The completion of the Royce Hall came about in 1929 and then it was named after the American philosopher Josiah Royce. The exterior design of Royce Hall was modeled after Milan’s Basilica of Sant’Ambrogio or St. Ambrose Church in northern Italy. St. Ambrose Church was one of the ancient churches in Italy that was built by Bishop Ambrose in the tenth and eleventh centuries. The unique Italian Romanesque Revival style of Royce Hall was being restored by the State Historic Preservation Office.

George Gershwin, an American composer; Arnold Schoenberg, also an American composer; and the prominent jazz clarinetist, saxophonist and big band leader, Jimmy Dorsey’s Band, all performed in Royce Hall in the 1930’s. Duke Ellington also played in Royce Hall for free and, after this, a lot of artists performed here. One of the respected people who performed in Royce Hall is the late American singer and Academy Award-winning actor, Frank Sinatra. The American composer and pianist Leonard Bernstein, and Ella Fitzgerald who is one of the most influential jazz vocalists are also one of those people who performed in Royce Hall. Speakers like Albert Einstein and the late president John F. Kennedy also appeared in Royce Hall. Other prominent people who performed in Royce Hall are as follows:

Twyla Tharp – she is an American dancer and choreographer.
Mikhail Baryshnikov – a Russian dancer, actor and also a choreographer.
Frank Zappa – is an American composer, film director, singer, and satirist.
Yo-Yo Ma – a Chinese American cellist and known to be the world’s finest practitioners of the cello.
Meredith Monk – she was an American composer, vocalist, performer, choreographer, film-maker, and a director.
New York Philharmonic – one of the oldest symphony orchestras in the United States of America.

In 1936, the performing arts were established in Royce Hall. It was the University of California president Robert Gordon Sproul who assigned a group to create the UCLA’s first Center for the Performing Arts. Among the first performances that was held in Royce Hall was the Budapest String Quartet; they are one of the most distinguished chamber music of our time and they were known for their warm expressive interpretations of the classical repertory, particularly Beethoven. Another particular performance that was first seen in Royce Hall was the great contralto Marian Anderson; she was the first African-American to be named a permanent member of the Metropolitan Opera Company. The Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra was also one of the first performances that were held in Royce Hall. In the early 1939 the Swiss dancer and dance therapist Trudi Schoop and her company appeared in the artist series in Royce Hall.

In addition to this are other important dance troupes like the American Ballet Theatre, based in New York and is one of the foremost ballet companies of the 20th century; Martha Graham, who is one of the pioneers of the modern dance and an American dancer and choreographer; Pina Bausch Tanztheater Wuppertal, who was choreographer and one of the giant figures of modern dance, and a leading influence in the development of the Tanztheater style of dance; Bella Lewitzky, a modern dance choreographer; and Robert Joffrey, who is an American dancer, teacher, producer, and choreographer, known for his highly imaginative modern ballets. Furthermore, performing arts groups such as the American Ballet Theatre and the Bejart Ballet have all performed in the Royce Hall. The Los Angeles Philharmonic orchestra has often used the Royce Hall, due to its much-admired acoustics and their 6,600-pipe Skinner pipe organ, while the Royce Hall’s 1,833 seats were used for recording sessions.

In the aftermath of the1994 earthquake, the Royce Hall receives a heavy damage to its main facilities. An amount of over $71 million was spent during its restoration, and some changes were made in the exterior designs of the Royce Hall. The restoration of Royce Hall was completed in 1997 and it was reopened in 1998; they also raised $1.5 million for the benefit of the schools, specifically, the School of the Arts and Architecture, and UCLA Performing Arts, formerly known as the UCLA Center for the Performing Arts and now known as UCLA Live.

The Royce Hall was known to be one of America’s great concert halls and Los Angeles’ second cultural center. The Royce Hall mostly serves the western part of Los Angeles. The Royce Hall’s program represents its own identity, aside from dancing and music performances. The Royce Hall was known for its perfect beauty, the music and ambience that creates a magical experience that people will really love. The special morning demonstration performances at the Royce Hall provide other public school students an opportunity to experience the finest performing arts in the country.

The UCLA's Royce Hall building was modeled after a Milan, Italy, and basilica and was designed by designer David Allison. Its single Romanesque architecture encouraged the State Historic Preservation Office to select it for reinstatement to its original design. In 1936, University of California President Robert Gordon Sproul appointed a group to oversee programming and in 1937, Royce Hall’s first performing arts season was born. The first payment series included the great contralto Marian Anderson, the Budapest String Quartet and the Los Angeles Philharmonic.

But rather than merely duplicate downtown programming on a smaller scale, Royce Hall’s program began to tell between itself and develop its own uniqueness. From the beginning, dance constituted an important element of this new identity. Trudi Schoop and her company appeared on the artist’s series as early as 1939, and subsequently nearly every vital dance troupe, from the American Ballet Royce Hall Theatre and Martha Graham to the Ballet Russe, Bejart Ballet, Pina Bausch Tanztheater Wuppertal, Robert Joffrey and Bella Lewitzky has carry out on its stage.
