Wicked is one of the latest musicals to take Broadway by storm. An original story, fantastic music, and a Tony nomination for best scenic design are only a few of the reasons that Wicked has become one of Broadway's biggest hits in years. Wicked the musical has also been breaking box office records. It holds the record for the biggest opening in the West End and the production has played to more than 1.2 million people in the West End alone. The North American tour has been seen by over two million people. Wicked's success was not confined to the West End . Its success has spawned productions in Chicago , Los Angeles , New York , Tokyo , Australia , and Stuttgart , along with two North American tours that have visited over 30 cities in Canada and the United States . Aside from breaking records, Wicked has also been nominated for ten Tony Awards, including wins for Best Actress, Scenic Design and Costume Design. In addition it has also won six Drama Desk Awards.

Wicked is based on the best-selling novel ‘Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West' by Gregory Maguire with music and lyrics by Stephen Schwartz. It is a re-imagining of the classic story ‘The Wonderful Wizard of Oz' but from the perspective of the witches of the Land of Oz. The story follows Elphaba, the future Wicked Witch of the West and her relationship with Glenda, the Good Witch of the North. Because of their opposite personalities and opinions, their friendship struggles, especially as they fall for the same love interest.

Wicked opened its fifth production in Los Angeles , California at the Pantages Theatre with an official opening on February 21, 2007. By December 2007 it became the highest-grossing attraction in Los Angeles theatre history, the record previously being held by the musical, ‘The Producers'. It was announced on April 1, 2008 that the production would close on January 11, 2009. By then the show will have played almost 800 performances and 12 previews.
