Orange County Performing Arts Center - Segerstrom Hall Facts and Information

The arts are one of humanity’s greatest achievements. It enables man to express the inner working of his psyche, which can be subtle or direct. Art could also take form in a lasting work of art such as paintings, sculptures, and other media, or can be fleeting but make an indelible impression to those touched by it. Still, for art to thrive, it needs a suitable host.

There are a lot of outstanding venues in California that hosts some of the world’s most talented performers today. One such venue is Costa Mesa, California’s Segerstrom Hall-O.C. Center. The center encompasses the 3,000-seat Segerstrom Hall, the 2,000-seat Renée and Henry Segerstrom Concert Hall, the 500-seat multi-functional Samueli Theater, 250-seat Founders Hall, and the Community plaza. The Segerstrom Hall-O.C. Center is the venue of choice of the world’s top dance companies, Broadway shows, and numerous musical events. The Segerstrom Hall-O.C. Center is the embodiment of a community’s dedication to the arts and music, which made the building of this outstanding facility possible.

The concept for this outstanding facility began to take form in 1960, when leaders of Orange County community felt that the time is ripe to build a competitive arts center. After all, the region was experiencing rapid growth and development in population and infrastructure, with major schools and businesses thriving in the community. Also, two high-caliber performing groups, the Philharmonic Society of Orange County and the Pacific Symphony, were in need of a competent venue to host their performances and facilitate the further development of their organizations.

Various sites have been considered but were ultimately deemed insufficient. It wasn’t until 1979 when a suitable location was determined, when art patron Elaine Redfield proposed a 5-acre land owned by Costa Mesa real estate developers, the Segerstrom Family. The Segerstrom Family was a supporter of the arts, and favored Redfield’s suggestion, prompting them to donate the location as the site of the Segerstrom Hall-O.C. Center. It was decided that the project is to be a strictly private venture, neither soliciting nor accepting government funding. The Segerstrom Hall-O.C. Center is the first facility of such scope to do so. The facility was designed by Charles Lawrence, and acoustics was designed by a talented team comprised of Dr. A. Harold Marshall from Auckland, New Zealand, Dennis Paoletti from San Francisco and Jerald R. Hyde from St. Helena. Construction of the Segerstrom Hall-O.C. Center began on the 7th of July, 1983.

The product of the community’s plan eventually took fruition on the 29th of September, 1986, with the successful opening of the Segerstrom Hall. Segerstrom Hall was one of the decade’s most modern facilities, featuring cutting-edge designs that can accommodate a wide array of performing arts. The inauguration of the Segerstrom Hall was graced by soprano Leonyte Price, who sang the Star Spangled Banner.

In 1998, the Segerstrom family made the expansion of the Segerstrom Hall-O.C. Center possible by donating another piece of land. The expansion involved the building of a 2,000-seat concert hall, a 500-seat multi-purpose theater, an education center, and other facilities. The team commissioned for this project includes architect Cesar Pelli, acousticians Russell Johnson and Damian Doria of Artec Consultants, Inc. and landscape architect Peter Walker and Partners.

The Segerstrom family showed their commitment to the Segerstrom Hall-O.C. Center in 2000, when Henry Segerstrom committed $40 million dollars to shoulder a fifth of the center’s projected $200 million capital. Another notable benefactor of the Segerstrom Hall-O.C. Center was Henry Samueli, who donated $10 million to the center.

Expansion of the Segerstrom Hall-O.C. Center began on the 6th of February, 2003, and was celebrated with the performance of the Pacific Symphony at the Segerstrom Hall and an impressive fireworks display. The groundbreaking ceremony was open to the public.

The Segerstrom Hall-O.C. Center’s seat Renée and Henry Segerstrom Concert Hall was officially opened on the 15th of September, 2006. The 2000-seat concert hall’s inauguration was celebrated with a concert by the Pacific Symphony led by Carl St. Clair, the Pacific Symphony’s music director. The concert also featured the world-renowned soprano, Placido Domingo, who sang the world premier of Canciones de Lorca by composer William Bolcom. The concert also featured other performers such as the Pacific Chorale. On the 16th of September, 2006, the Segerstrom Hall-O.C. Center held another concert by the Pacific Symphony and the Pacific Chorale, who performed the world premier of The Passion of Ramakrishna by Philip Glass, and also featured the performance of violin virtuoso Midori, who presented his rendition of Beethoven’s Violin Concerto.

The inauguration also featured a performance by LA-based group, Camp Freddy, as well as the young talent of the Mariinsky Theatre Conservatory. It was also during these times that the Segerstrom Hall-O.C. Center was celebrating its 20th anniversary. On the night of the anniversary, patrons of the Segerstrom Hall-O.C. Center were treated with a concert of the celebrated singer, Tony Bennett.
