Los Angeles Coliseum Facts and Information

The Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum is the home of the University of Southern California Trojans and one of the biggest stadiums in the country. The Coliseum was built to commemorate World War I veterans, and rededicated for all veterans of war in 1968. The LA Coliseum is also a historical site, being the host of the 1932 and 1984 Olympic Games. The construction of the LA Coliseum began on the 21st of December, 1921 and officially opened on the 1st of May, 1923. Construction for this wonderful coliseum cost 995,000 dollars. Its initial capacity was set to accommodate an audience of 76,000. Renovations done to the coliseum has changed this figure in 1932, when the capacity was set to house up to 101,574 spectators, and the seating capacity was again changed to 92,500 in 1995. The LA Coliseum is owned by the city of Los Angeles and run and maintained by the Los Angeles Coliseum Commission. The LA Coliseum can be found at 3911 South Figueroa Street, Los Angeles, California, on 17 acres of Exposition Park, which also features museums, gardens, and the Los Angeles Sports Arena; and it was declared as a State and National Historical Landmark in 1984.

The very first football game played at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum was held on the 6th of October, 1923. It featured a game of the USC Trojans against the Pomona Sagehens, where the Trojans proved victorious 23 to 7.

The Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum is one of the most historic venues in the United States. It has been the home of many notable sports teams. The University of Southern California Trojans, who compete in the NCAA, has called the coliseum home since 1923. Its rival team, the UCLA Bruins, has also called the LA Coliseum home from 1923 to 1981. The Los Angeles Rams who participate in the NFL has also been housed by the LA Coliseum from 1946-1979. The Los Angeles Don, who played in the now defunct AAFC, used to be housed at the coliseum from 1946 to 1949. The Los Angeles Dodger, who participates on the Major League Baseball, also called the LA Coliseum home from 1958-1961, until they moved to the Dodgers Stadium. The Los Angeles Chargers that used to participate on the now defunct AFP is another team that was hosted by the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum. The Los Angeles Raiders, now known as the Oakland Raiders, used to play their home games at the coliseum until the NFL team moved back to Oakland. The Los Angeles Express also held tenure at the coliseum when they played for the now defunct USFL. The Los Angeles Xtreme who used to play for the short-lived league, XFL, also held tenure at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum.

During the time of its completion, the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum was the largest venue in Los Angeles, able to accommodate a crowd of up to 76,000. Ten years after its completion, the LA Coliseum was chosen to host the 1932 Summer Olympics, prompting a renovation which involved expansion of the seating capacity to 101,574 and the addition of the Olympic Cauldron. Also, a main entrance to the coliseum displayed the Olympic rings. The addition of these features prompted the coliseum to be called Olympic Stadium.

When the LA Coliseum was again chosen as the host for the 1984 Olympic Games, a pair of full-scale bronze statues modeled after Terry Schroeder and Jennifer Innis was also added, which was positioned on top of the Olympic Gateway. The LA Coliseum hosted the opening and closing on both occasions, and was used as the main site for track and field games.

The Olympic Cauldron is lighted during the final quarter of USC football games. Special occasions also warrant the lighting of the cauldron like the hosting of the Olympics in another city. Other notable events that were acknowledged by the lighting of the Olympic Cauldron include the 7-day tribute to Ronald Reagan in 2004, when the former president passed away. Also, in April of 2005, the cauldron was lighted to pay respects to the death of Pope John Paul II. The September 11, 2001 attacks also prompted the lighting of the Olympic torch for more than a week.

The Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum is one of the most celebrated venues in the world. It is the only facility to host the Olympic Games twice, and has admitted football fans and others for more than 70 years. The LA Coliseum is the site of the 1959 World Series, and also played host to the 1959 Major League Baseball All-Star Game. The late John F. Kennedy delivered his historic acceptance speech at the 1960 Democratic National Convention at the LA Coliseum. The very first NFL-AFL crossover championship was also hosted by the LA Coliseum in January, 1967, which eventually came to be known as the Super Bowl. The coliseum also hosted the 1973 Super Bowl. The longest professional football game to date was also played at the LA Coliseum. The game was between the USFL teams, the Los Angeles Express and Michigan Panthers. The game happened on the 30th of June, 1984, and was decided after a triple overtime game in favor of Los Angeles, 27 to 21.

Yet another notable event held at the LA Coliseum was the 1987 papal mass. It was the very first papal visit to Los Angeles, and Pope John Paul held a mass at the coliseum. It was also the site of the Billy Graham Crusade, which drew an attendance of 134,254.

The LA Coliseum not only hosts NCAA football games, but also international soccer games. The Coliseum is also used for various events and concerts, and even used as a film set.

The Los Angeles bid as a host for the 2016 Olympic Games also means that the there is a possibility for the LA Coliseum to host the event 3 times, an honor that is unparalleled by any other venue.
