The John Anson Theater is one of the great music venues of Los Angeles, California, United States. The John Anson Ford Amphitheater is nestled on a 45 acre park-like backdrop in the Cahuenga Pass. John Anson Theater History

By 1920, John Anson Ford Amphitheater was built as the site of the Pilgrimage Play. Christine Wetherill Stevenson considered the dramatic outdoor setting of the play through the wild beauty of the Cahuenga Pass. She purchased the land together with Mrs. Chauncey D. Clark in which John Anson Theater was built. The John Anson Theater, during those times, was a wooden outdoor amphitheater. Notable actors performed in the play every summer from year 1920 to 1929. In October of 1929, the original structure was destroyed by a brush fire. The John Anson Theater as the Pilgrimage Theater during those times is re-constructed with pride and elegance. The theater has an artistic style of ancient Judaic architecture and bears a resemblance to the gates of Jerusalem, which was built on the same site and was opened by the year 1931. John Anson Ford Amphitheater is considered as one of the oldest performing arts venues in Los Angeles.

The events of Pilgrimage Play were being performed in the theater when, in 1941, the land was deeded to the County of Los Angeles. The Pilgrimage Play was disrupted when the venue was converted into dormitories for servicemen during World War II. Then the Pilgrimage Play continued to be presented until 1964, when a lawsuit forced its closure due to its religious nature.

The John Anson Theater tickets continued to sell out to patrons as the amphitheatre was used for a variety of concerts and music events. Unfortunately, the supporters of the events decreased and the strength of the Pilgrimage Theatre as a great venue gradually worsened. Thanks to the late County Supervisor, John Anson Ford, who got hold of funding for capital developments. Due to this situation, the Pilgrimage Theater was renamed after him. From time to time, the renewed John Anson Ford Amphitheater was used for Shakespearean theater, dance performances as well as jazz concerts.

In 1993, the County Supervisor, Ed Edelman, revived the historic, John Anson Theater, with the production of the Summer Nights at the Ford (also called Ford Amphitheatre Season).

The site of John Anson Theater was improved and renovated between 1995 and 2000. Developments were made to the stage, and backstage, as well as to the public areas of John Anson Theater. The historic site continued its glamour with modern safety and great performance standards for the benefit of all.
