The Great Western Forum is an indoor arena built in 1967. The construction of The Forum was initiated by the then owner of the Los Angeles Lakers and founding owner of the Los Angeles Kings, Jack Kent Cooke. The Great Western Forum has been the host of the Los Angels Lakers and the Los Angeles Kings from 1967 to 1999. Other sports teams who have been tenants of the Forum include the Los Angeles Sparks of the WNBA, the Los Angeles Lazers of the MISL, and the Los Angeles United of the CISL. The Great Western Forum can be found at 3900 West Manchester Boulevard, Inglewood, California.

The Great Western Forum hosted prestigious sporting events, such as the 1972 and 1983 NBA All-Star games. It was also the site of choice in 1984 for the Summer Olympics’ basketball tournament.

The Great Western Forum is one of the sources of pride for the city of Inglewood. During the time of its completion in 1967, locals even called the arena as the “fabulous” Forum. It was hailed as one of the most beautiful infrastructures during its time. The construction of the Forum cost 16 million dollars and its likeness was designed after the Roman Forum. Ownership of the Great Western Forum, along with the Lakers and Kings, changed hands in 1979 when Jerry Buss purchased them for 67.5 million dollars.

The Forum enjoyed its highest popularity during the 80’s, when the tenant Los Angeles Lakers enjoyed one of their most successful decades. The Great Western Forum became a frequent venue for the NBA Play-offs and NBA Finals, drawing large crowds eager to watch the games.

The pride of Inglewood also hosted the 1984 Summer Olympics, when the Great Western Forum was chosen as the venue for Olympic Basketball tournament. This directed international attention to the outstanding arena, further bolstering its already formidable reputation.

In 1988, naming rights of the Forum was sold to Great Western Savings & Loan, thus changing the original name to the Great Western Forum. The original color motif of dark orange and red was changed to blue and white. And the name stuck even after Great Western (the company) was bought by Washington Mutual.

In the 1990’s The Great Western Forum continued to host the Los Angeles Lakers together with the Los Angeles Kings. By this time, the Great Western Forum has become one of the oldest arenas hosting professional sports games. In 1997, the Great Western Forum became the host of the Los Angeles based WNBA team, the LA Sparks. The Lakers and the LA Kings eventually moved to the newly constructed Staples center in 1999. The Sparks remained at the Great Western Forum until they joined the LA Kings and LA Lakers in the Staples Center in 2000.

In 2000, the Faithful Center Bible Church bought the ownership for the arena. They used the facility mainly as a regular venue for their Sunday services. The congregation, numbering to over 12,000 members, made the facility available for rent or various functions such as a site for concerts. Affairs of the facility are handled by the congregation-owned Forum Enterprises, Inc.

The Great Western Forum has also been used as a location for various film productions. In 2002, the inside of the Great Western was used for the movie, Like Mike. Like Mike tells the story of an orphan boy who gained the skill of a famed basketball player after buying an old pair of rubber shoes from a thrift store.
