Arlington Theater is the largest theater located in Santa Barbara. The Arlington Theater is exactly located at 1317 State Street, Santa Barbara, California, United States. The people in the city of Santa Barbara are considered to be music lovers. That is why theaters in this place are very well known and famous. As stated above, the largest theater in Santa Barbara is the Arlington Theater. This main performing arts venue is built with 2,000 comfortable seats for the spectators.

Arlington Theater was built in the year 1931. Before the structure became a theater, it was a hotel known as Arlington hotel. It was also where one of the Santa Barbara’s most colorful episodes took place that began in the early 1874. During that time, most of the visitors traveling in Santa Barbara came from rich families. That was the time when a group of businessmen got an idea to provide a luxurious hotel that can accommodate them during their vacation. The group of businessmen formed the Seaside Hotel Company that they named Arlington Hotel. Since then, the hotel became known and served as a reception for the visitors from the upper class. The outstanding beauty of the hotel attracted many visitors during that time.  Arlington hotel was also a tourists spot known in every place of Santa Barbara. Back then, carriage used to pick up travelers and tourists staying in the hotel. However, the hotel was destroyed by a fire on August 15, 1909. The accident was said to be caused by faulty electric wiring. The accident was up to now being remembered by the people in Santa Barbra. Soon after the fire accident, the hotel began to be built again because of the effort of its many loyal winter guests. The newly-made hotel featured two towers, each one  held a 60,000 gallon water tank, 2,100 electric lights, ten miles of telephone wire, underground entrance and parking. It also features rose gardens, greenhouses, a deer park, zoo, and golf course. The former all-wood hotel was now an improved structure that can accommodate twice the number of the first made. However, on June 29, 1925, another disaster took place. The earthquake destroyed the Hotel and the tragic accident causes the Arlington hotel to collapse. The heavy water tank in the Arlington’s tower swayed from side to side that smashed the hotel. Allan Hancock, a millionaire who is engaged in the business of real estate and oil refinery, was currently stayed in the hotel with his son. Allan Hancock managed to escape the ferocious fire while his son didn’t. His son died in the tragic accident. During an interview, Allan Hancock states, “It all happened in a minute. The crash of falling timbers and steel beams and the walls of the hotel made an indescribable inferno of sound which dazed me. From the time I leaped from bed until I was crawling from under the collapsed building seemed but a moment. Trapped nearby was a dining room maid. She and I crawled to the lawn and a bellboy helped us to the street.” He also added, “My son probably never awakened from his sleep. His skull was fractured and his neck broken. It was best if he had to go that he go without suffering.” After the disaster, part of the building which was not damaged was demolished.

The place was vacant for a long time. In the year 1930, a showcase movie house for Fox West Coast Theaters was established in the former Arlington Theater. The newly established building was designed by Architect Joseph J. Plunkett. The movie theater was made for the entertainment of people in Santa Barbara. Finally, in the year 1931, the movie theater was transformed into the present Arlington Theater. Since then Arlington Theater became home for the successful Santa Barbara Film Festival. The structure of Arlington Theater wasn’t merely changed since Fox West Coast Theater. The amazing design of Spanish style building, red tiled building that features a covered courtyard with fountain, balconies, domes and arches, romantic stairways, chandeliers, and iron lanterns, continues to attract visitors and tourists. 

In the past years up to the present, the Arlington Theatre has entertained a lot of audience. The Music of the Night was considered as one of the successful shows held in the theater. Performance at the Arlington Theater was located in the C. A. Roberson Theater at the Southeast Campus of Tarrant County College. The successful concerts of famous artists such as Tish Hinojosa are considered to reach the broad variety of shows in the Arlington Theater. An old-fashioned organ, hidden from view, which rises on a platform when played before a performance, also catches attention from thousands of spectators.
