MGM Grand Las Vegas Hotel Information

The MGM Grand is a decidedly strange and somewhat wonderful place, a Las Vegas version of Oz for adults and children of all ages. There's a rainforest, a robotic comedian, a spaceship that lands twice nightly, and a gigantic gilded lion facing the Strip that is as much of a symbol of the promise and threat of Las Vegas as anything else in town. Oh, and it also features a huge hotel and casino and one of the widest ranges of restaurants in town. Rising above the gilded lion at the Las Vegas Strip and Tropicana Avenue is a spectac­ ular tower of a sign, boasting an impressive video screen visible by day and night, broadcasting scenes from the hotel's EFX show and other events. And there's also MGM Grand Adventures, a small theme park with rides, shows, restaurants, and shops.

Alongside the gilded lion, the MGM casino has linked a set of pedestrian bridges that connect the four corners of the Strip and Tropicana Avenue; you can walk from the MGM to New York- New York or the Tropicana, and connect to a bridge to the Excalibur and from there by tram to Mandalay Bay. Speaking of lions, the MGM Grand Las Vegas Hotel has opened a three-level lion habitat within the casino, home to about a dozen living, growling symbols of the MGM empire; about five will be on display at any one time. The habitat is under the super­ vision of animal trainer Keith Evans who cares for seventeen lions, three tigers, and two snow leopards at his Las Vegas home, known to some as "The Cat House." Admission to the area will be free; you can, though, plunk down $20 for a special "photo opportunity" with some of the creatures. The habitat is open daily from 11 A.M. to 11 P.M.

MGM Grand has brought back the infamous MGM Studio 54, one of the ultra-trendy landmarks of New York's 1970s disco scene. The three-story nightclub is located in the former Emerald City, just off the spectacularly improved Lion Entrance on the corner of Las Vegas Boulevard and Tropicana Avenue. MGM Grand's Studio 54 showcases state-of-the-art sound, music, and light­ ing, and four dance floors and bars. There is also an exclusive invited-guest area and several semi-private lounges that can hold up to 400 people; total capac­ ity is about 1,200. The decor of the club features artwork from New York's original dance club and techno-chic scaffolding and lighting; there is, of course, a mirrored ball over the dance floor.

The bartenders and host are part of the performance, and they enforce a dress code with the emphasis on flash. "Dress spectacular" demands the sign at the door; show up in a T-shirt reading "I'm with funny," baggy jeans, or a silly hat and you'll be sent to your room. If you're allowed in, you'll have to pay a cover charge on Friday and Saturday. The cover charge, though, applies only to men; ladies are free. The club is closed on Monday and Sunday. Near the Las Vegas Strip entrance is an outpost of the Rainforest Cafe chain. The entrance to the two-story, 500-seat restaurant and store is beneath a forty-foot cascading waterfall. There is almost always a long wait to get in; make your reservation at the elephant's head and plan to dine early or late to avoid crowds.

The Magic Mushroom Juice and Coffee Bar includes a playful anima­ tronic gorilla family. There's also a robotic alligator moving back and forth in a steamy pond; he is a target for coins. Alongside the gift shop are stands for live parrots and other birds; a naturalist will answer questions from time to time. Other highlights include several huge aquariums. Take the escalator toward the sky bridge for a good view into the restaurant. Lunch and dinner entrees, which include burgers, sandwiches, salads, and pasta dishes. The MGM restaurant opens at 7 A.M. daily and stays open until midnight during the week, until 1 A.M. on Friday and Saturday. An expansion just for the high-rollers, the Mansion at the MGM Grand, is inspired by Tuscan architecture, these private suites and villas range from 3,000 to 14,000 square feet. The Mansion features exquisite villas and suites that are entirely enclosed by an atrium highlighted by formal gardens and indoor and outdoor pools.

The new lion rests atop a twenty-five-foot pedestal at the corner of the Strip and Tropicana Avenue; weighing fifty tons, it is the largest bronze sculpture in the United States. The sculpture is framed by water fountains and extensive landscaping. Video display screens at the exterior and interior of the Strip entry are among the largest ever constructed. The spectacular EFX show-one of the Econoguide Bests of Las Vegas­ occupies the 1,700-seat MGM Grand Theater. This is a ninety-minute jaw drop­ per of an evening. The $41 million production, which boasts a seventy-person cast and more special effects than much of the rest of the Strip combined, was recast in 1999 with the arrival of the biggest, or at least the tallest star on Broadway, singer and dancer Tommy Tune; he renewed his contract into at least the end of the year 2000. Tune takes on the roles of Merlin, the wise man and sorcerer of the Arthurian legend; P. T. Barnum, the legendary circus entrepre­ neur; magician Harry Houdini; and H. G. Wells, the English science fiction writer. The story is a bit, shall we say, thin ... but the show is a lot of fun and the special effects and stagecraft is truly amazing, including a huge flying saucer that somehow arrives on stage, plus numerous fire effects and explosions.

EFX is presented nightly at 7:30 and 10:30 i , . M.; the show is dark Sunday and Monday. Tickets were about $70 for preferred view seating, and $49.50 for other seats. Children's tickets were $35 for all shows. The MGM Grand Las Vegas Hotel and casino are certainly grand and worth a visit, but the overall tone is down a notch from places like Caesars Palace or the Mirage.MGM Grand is also one of the few hotel complexes we know of that requires the use of a map; we suspect some of the bellhops keep copies in their back pockets, too.

The MGM Grand Theatre is a handsome Vegas showroom, wider than it is deep with a stage about three city buses wide and decorated in red and black. The tables and booths seat about 1,700. The relatively cozy Hollywood Theatre, with 630 seats, features headliners. The Sports Book, to the left of the Grand Theatre, has a gigantic screen capable of handling a single event like the Super Bowl, or being split into as many as twelve separate images for various sporting events.

We also mustn't overlook (as if we could) the MGM Grand Garden spe­ cial events center. This arena, modeled after New York's famed Madison Square Garden , offers seating for up to 15,200 for championship boxing. There's nothing very grand about the arena itself, except for its ability to change its configuration for events from ice shows, hockey games, and bas­ ketball games to prize fights and concerts. According to the designers, it can be transformed in four hours from a major exhibition hall to an arena for sporting events or concerts. The Garden was the site of the much-publicized opening night concerts by Barbra Streisand, plus a Millennium eve show.

In the MGM Grand hotel in Las Vegas, standard rooms are about 446 square feet in size; 744 suites range in size from 675 to 6,000 square feet. (A bit of perspective here: a typical three- or four-bedroom home is 2,000 square feet or less.)

Standard MGM rooms are decorated in Wizard of Oz, Hollywood, Southern, and Casablanca styles. They are larger than average and fairly quiet. Suites include traditional, Marrakech, Oriental, Bahamian, and Las Vegas designs. The Grand Class on the twenty-ninth floor at the MGM Grand includes fifty-two two-story suites primarily reserved for VIP guests and celebrities; the three Presidential Suites include wrap-around glass windows, a full kitchen with private chef and but­ler, and no less than twenty-one telephones, including one in the personal suite elevator. There is even a semi-private restaurant that you have to know about and be known before you can enter.

In mid-2000, the MGM Grand opened a satellite check-in desk at McCarran Airport , the first of its kind at any U.S. airport. Guests can check in and pick up their room keys, make restaurant reservations, and purchase show tickets. Show Tickets includes all MGM Tickets as well. The huge MGM casino encompasses a total of 171,500 square feet, including about 3,500 slot machines, 165 gaming tables, and a Race and Sports Book. The casino is divided into four themed areas: Emerald City, Hollywood, Monte Carlo, and Sports.

Other Eateries

At the very center of it all is Wolfgang Puck's Cafe, a Nevada outpost of the successful California chef's unusual restaurants. Puck's circular eatery is a high concept pizzeria. It is open from 11 A.M. YO 11 P.M. Most of the other MGM restaurants are clustered in a corridor that leads from the casino to the MGM Grand Garden and the MGM Grand Adventures area. Hot restaurants at MGM include The Hollywood Brown Derby, a re-cre­ ation of the California original, featuring its famed Cobb salad, steaks, and other American fare. Tre Visi and La Scala are cheek-to-jowl fancy and infor­ mal Italian eateries. La Scala is run by restauranteur Franco Nuschese, owner of the popular Cafe Milano in Washington, D.C.

Neyla, a Mediterranean grill on the Studio Walk, opened in late 1999. Din­ers can try different types of "mezza," a series of appetizers including salads, plump stuffed grape leaves, dips, kabobs, spicy sausages, and spinach pies, accompanied by wood-fired flat breads. On a recent visit, entrees included strip steak with seven spices and Bulgarian feta cheese, and pan-roasted Moroccan tuna with chickpea salad. The restaurant is open from 11 A.M. to 10 P.M. Sun­ day through Thursday, and until 11 P.M. on Friday and Saturday.

Gatsby's, located in a most magnificently posh room, features fine French cuisine with an eclectic California flair. Offerings at Gatsby's include a combi­ nation of pan-seared Kobe beef, guinea hen, and Louisiana ostrich with sun­ dried tomatoes and green peppercorn reduction for $40, and sauteed lobster with pickled mango relish for $65. Desserts include Caesar's Chocolate Ooze Cake for $9, and The Tartanic, lemon meringue on a pool of raspberry creme Anglaise for $8. A tasting menu is about $75 ( prices are subject to change). The restaurant is open daily from 8:30 A.M. to 10:30 P.M.

Mark Miller's Grill Room, a transplant from Santa Fe, specializing in Cow­ boy Rib Steaks, with an average check of about $38 to $45 per person. Ricardo's, a 320-seat Mexican restaurant, features both fine and casual din­ ing, entertainment, a walk-up margarita bar, and a taco bar. Celebrity chef/author Emeril Lagasse brings his New Orleans blend of mod­ ern Creole/Cajun cooking with Emeril's New Orleans Fish House restaurant featuring his signature dish, Emeril's New Orleans barbecue shrimp. Fresh fish is flown in daily.

Dragon Court is a high-tone Chinese eatery, quiet and off the busy track. The small menu includes braised shark fin and chicken in brown sauce for $30, as well as more ordinary offerings such as beef with oyster sauce for $13.50 and pork chop with black pepper sauce for $15. Other items we saw: golden fried egg yolks, pu-pu platters, and honey-glazed barbecue ribs. The One-Liners Fast Food Court features a Nathan's, a McDonald's, and Hamada Oriental Express.

Check out the robotic version of comedian Foster Brooks doing one of his routines at the bar near the elevators to the MGM Grand hotel rooms. It takes a while before you realize that the guy sitting at the bar telling stories is not just your ordi­ nary drunk. He is a professional, electronically operated drunk. The Grand Oasis includes a swimming pool with beach. Nearby is the Grand Health Club & Spa, a fitness center that includes six Jacuzzis.

For parents who want to park the kids somewhere away from the casinos and showrooms for a while, the MGM Grand Las Vegas Youth Center will accommodate children from ages 3 (out of diapers) to 12 at its location near the theme park. Rates from 8 A.M. to 5i ,.M5 are about $6 per hour for guests of the MGM hotel and $8 per hour for others; the hourly charge rises by one dollar from 5 i , . M. to midnight. There is a two-hour minimum and a five-hour maximum; beepers are available to the most nervous of parents.

Also available is the Wizard's Midway & Arcade, downstairs from the con­ course to the theme park, and featuring an impressive collection of the latest video games. If you've got any stomach left after gambling or visiting the theme park, you may want to try the G360 virtual reality arcade game; you'll "fly" your craft into a dogfight and then come back to a carrier landing. If you're anything like the pilots I saw, you'll spend most of the time upside down trying to figure out which way is up.

The MGM Grand-Bally's Monorail, privately funded by the casinos, fol­lows a 1.6-mile route north-south along Audrie Lane on Bally's property, cross­ ing Harmon Avenue and proceeding along an internal boulevard on MGM Grand property. This is not a thrill ride. In fact, it's a fairly slow somewhat boring short trip between the backside of the MGM Grand Hotel (with a peek into MGM Grand Adventures) and the even-more undistinguished backside of Bally's. Two trains of six forty-passenger cars are available; the potential top speed is fifty miles per hour, but we've never seen the monorail break into a trot, much less a dash.

The companies believe the line may turn out to be the first leg of a system that will one day link downtown, the Strip, the Las Vegas Convention Center, and McCarran International Airport. As this book went to press, MGM was leading the charge for such a major project. The monorail links what is now the top end of the Strip-MGM Grand, Tropicana, Luxor, Excalibur, and the New York- New York-to the Center Strip. Bally's is next door to the Aladdin Hotel on one side and the Imperial Palace on the other, and a few blocks away from Caesars Palace and the Mirage. The Mirage, of course, is linked by trolley to its neighbor, Treasure Island.
