Calgary Flames History:
Heading into the offseason after the 2005-2006 NHL season, the Calgary Flames had one major concern they needed to fill, finding a legitimate first-line player to play alongside superstar Jarome Iginla. The Calgary Flames got that by trading for Alex Tanguay, who has put together back-to-back 70+ point seasons on the offensively powered Colorado Avalanche. The Colorado Avalanche did not have to give much up to get them Tanguay either; they gave up defenseman Jordan Leopold and two draft picks. The Calgary Flames replaced Leopold with Andrei Zyuzin, who is used to playing a defensive-minded game, spending time playing for the Minnesota Wild.
Besides that, the Calgary Flames did not do much to change their lineup during the offseason. Although, they did sign winger Jeff Friesen who has the wheels to be more of a force in the new NHL, but he is very inconsistent and will probably not get back to being the 40-50 point player he used to be. The Flames also lost a few checking forwards in Chris Simon and Shean Donovan, and got rid of injury-riddled forward Mike Leclerc.
The Calgary Flames will again contend for the division title, but they will have a tougher time this year as Vancouver has gotten an elite goalie, and Minnesota have added some offensive punch with Pavol Demitra, and Mark Parrish. The Flames do have one of the best defensive units in the game, and they will probably continue to rely on them next season along with Mikka Kiprusoff to win hockey games. The key to a successful season for the Flames though is to improve on their 27th ranking in scoring from last season if they want any chance of not only winning their division, but also contending for the Stanley Cup. They have a great young scoring defenseman in Dion Phaneuf, and with the addition of Alex Tanguay, Jarome Iginla should definitely improve on his 67 point performance last season.
