Ducks vs Avalanche

The Anaheim Ducks host the Colorado Avalanche twice this coming season at Honda Center. The Avalanche, who had a breakout season under Head Coach Patrick Roy last season, won't make their first visit to Anaheim until March 20 th , well into the upcoming season. Less than two weeks later, the Avalanche will return again, on April 3. In three games during the 2013-2014 season, the Ducks won two of three versus the Avalanche. Last season the Avalanche had a breakout year, finishing first in the NHL Central Division with 112 points. After a strong finish to the regular season the Avalanche lost a disappointing playoff opening series to the Minnesota Wild, losing a key game seven on home ice.

The Avalanche's best player is Nathan MacKinnon, one of the top young talents in all of hockey. The 18-year old rookie, taken top overall in the NHL entry draft, had 63 points in his rookie season, taking a strong leadership role on the team and elevating his play with several big goals in the postseason. MacKinnon is joined on the Colorado roster by a handful of other young superstars, including Matt Duchene, Gabriel Landeskog, and Ryan O'Reilly. Duchene and Landeskog led the Avalanche with 70 and 65 points respectively, and should be even better in the 2014-2015 season. The Avalanche will need to replace Paul Stastny, one of their top players over the past several seasons and leading playoff scorer. Stastny signed with his home town team, the St. Louis Blues in the offseason. The biggest bet to replace Stastny is future Hall of Famer Jarome Iginla, who the Avalanche signed in the offseason. The former Flame and Bruin had 62 points in Boston last season.

Former top overall pick Erik Johnson and young defenseman Tyson Barrie lead the Avalanche defense, which features goaltender Semyon Varlamov, who had an outstanding 2.41 goals against average last season. Varlamov had 41 victories versus just 14 defeats.
