Montreal Canadiens History:
The Montreal Canadiens are based in Montreal , Quebec , Canada . The team was founded in 1909 which was eight years before the NHL was formed which makes the Canadiens the oldest club in the NHL and the only continuously operating club to predate the NHL.
When the Quebec Nordiques left the NHL in 1995 it made the Canadiens the only NHL team in Quebec .
The Canadiens hold the record of most won Stanley Cups. They have won an astounding 24 Stanley Cups, the first in 1916, than any other team. If one was to base it on a percentage, the Canadiens would be, historically, the most successful professional sports team (of the traditional four major sports) of Canada and the United States because they have won 36.3% of all NHL/NHA Stanley Cup championships. They only other teams to come close to that would be the Boston Celtics of the NBA at 27.8% and the New York Yankees at 25%. Within the teams first ten years of inception, the Canadiens won two Stanley Cups. The team was led by the "Punch Line" which was made up of Maurice "Rocket" Richard, Toe Blake, and Elmer Lach. They led the team to incredible success and from 1952 to 1960, the Canadiens won six Stanley Cups, including a record setting five straight from 1956 to 1960. Throughout these years a new set of stars emerged including Jean Beliveau, Doug Harvey, Dickie Moore, Bernie "Boom Boom" Geoffrion, and Jacques Plante.
In the following fifteen seasons, from 1965 to 1979, the Canadiens won ten more championships, with four straight Stanley Cups from 1976 to 1979. The Canadiens also won the Stanley Cup in 1986, led by rookie goaltender Patrick Roy, and then again in 1993, which continued their streak of winning at least one championship in every decade from the 1910s all the way to the 1990s. Because the Canadiens celebrated their Centennial year in 2008-09, the NHL awarded the 2009 NHL All-Star Game to Montreal as well as the 2009 NHL Entry Draft.
