Columbus Blue Jackets History:
The addition of the teams in Columbus and Minnesota to the National Hockey League for the 2000-2001 season saw the league become a 30 club circuit and completed a wave of expansion that began on June 25, 1997, when those two cities were formally admitted into the NHL along with Nashville and Atlanta. Columbus was placed in the Central Division of the Western Conference with the Chicago Blackhawk’s, Detroit Red Wings, Nashville Predators and St. Louis Blues. Principal owner of the NHL's Columbus franchise is John H. McConnell, who announced the selection of the team name Blue Jackets on November 11, 1997. "We wanted a name that reflected the spirit and pride that exists in Columbus" McConnell said. "The Blue Jacket [an insect] is aggressive, industrious, multi-tasked, resourceful and fast. Many of the qualities exemplified by our community." The name was selected after a name-the-team contest which drew over 14,000 entries and thousands of different suggestions.
The Blue Jackets were quick to start the process of putting some sting in their on-ice activities, hiring former Florida Panthers head coach Doug MacLean in February, 1998 as the franchise's first general manager. MacLean assembled a staff of scouts and consultants that includes former Los Angeles Kings general manager Sam McMaster and former NHL goaltender Rick Wamsley. Guiding the team on the ice will be Dave King, former coach of the Canadian national team whose previous NHL experience includes a head coaching job with the Calgary Flames and an assistant's role with the Montreal Canadiens. The Blue Jackets play out of Nationwide Arena, a $I50-million facility privately financed by Nationwide Insurance Enterprises and the Dispatch Printing Company. Excavation for the arena began in June 1998, with a formal groundbreaking ceremony on July 23rd. The mixeduse glass, brick and steel structure seats 18,500 for hockey and also houses an adjoining practice rink, an office building, retail space and restaurants.
The Blue Jackets enjoyed one of the NHL's most successful inaugural seasons when they took to the ice at the Nationwide Arena in 2000-01, becoming just the third expansion team (excluding the 1967-68 season) to top the 70-point plateau. The Blue Jackets posted a record of 28-39-9-6 for 71 points. Only the Mighty Ducks (33 wins, 71 points) and the Florida Panthers (33 wins, 83 points) have enjoyed better debut seasons. Ron Tugnutt Conference All-Slar Team. Sanderson led the Blue Jackets with 34 goals. Whitney was tops with 52 assists and 76 points.
Andrew Cassels and David Vyborny both scored 20 times. Goaltender Marc Denis started all but five of Columbus's games during the season. His 77 games played tied him for the second most by a goaltender in one year, while his total of more than 4,510 minutes played set a new record. Denis faced a league-high 2,404 shots and made a league-leading 2,172 saves for a percentage of .903. Though coach Dave King was fired midway through the 2002-03 season (president and general manager Doug MacLean took over behind the bench), players like Rostislav Klesla and Rick Nash give the Blue Jackets considerable upside. Klesla was the teams first draft choice in 2000. He was named to the NHL All Rookie team in 2001-02. Columbus traded up in the draft in order to claim Nash with the top pick in 2002. He was the youngest player in the NHL during the 2002-03 season and ranked among the rookie leaders in goals (17), assists (22) and points (39). He finished third in voting for the Calder Trophy behind winner Barret Jackman of St. Louis and Henrik Zetterberg of Detroit and, like Klesla before him, was named to the All Rookie team.
