Colorado Avalanche History:
Just like the previous offseason, the Colorado Avalanche lost several of key players. Last offseason they saw the departures of Adam Foote and superstar Peter Forsberg, this year they saw Rob Blake and Alex Tanguay go. The Colorado Avalanche were able to make the playoffs despite the loss of Foote and Forsberg, however, they finished the season 7th in Western Conference, their worst finish since the franchise moved to Colorado.
This year’s lineup is maybe one of the weakest teams they have had on paper in the last decade or so. They managed to acquire defenseman Jordan Leopold from the Calgary Flames in the Tanguay trade who is expected to fill some of holes in their defensive corps. Although, Leopold is will miss the first 2-3 months of the season as he recovers from surgery to repair a hernia. The Colorado Avalanche also added defenseman Ken Klee to their blueline, a player that might not fit in well with their offensive style of play, but will bring a much-needed physical game to the team. The only significant signing the Colorado Avalanche made to add offensive punch was center Tyler Arnason, who was playing well in Chicago before being traded to Ottawa at the trade deadline where he was invisible for the remaining 18 games.
Going into next season the only sure thing for the avalanche is their captain Joe Sakic, who will always come up with a great season. To make the playoffs though, many star players will have to bounce back from bad seasons. Milan Hejduk needs to get back to the form he was in before the lockout and goaltender Jose Theodore, who had his worst season yet as a starting goalie, needs to prove he can still play. The former Hart Trophy winner will have to get back to being one of the top 10 goalies in the league as huge part of the Colorado Avalanche success will rest on his shoulders with their weak defense corps.
One player the Colorado Avalanche should be excited about is winger Marek Svatos, who was on pace for a 40-goal in his rookie year last season before suffering a season-ending shoulder injury. Svatos is the main player that will be looked at to make up for the loss of Alex Tanguay.
On defense, the Colorado Avalanche will hope John-Michael Liles will rise to be the new number 1 defenseman, and to lead their top power-play unit now that Rob Blake is gone. Look for defenseman Brett Clark to come through with a career-year, as he will be looked at to provide some more offense to the Avalanche power play.
Just like Detroit Red Wings, and New Jersey Devils, the Colorado Avalanche is a team you never count out because they have one of the best captains in the league, and they always find ways to win. Different players will elevate their game to make up for the losses of their key players. Don’t be surprised to see them somehow make the playoffs in 2007.
