The U.S. Open is open to any professional, or to any amateur with an up-to-date USGA Handicap Index not exceeding 1.4. Players (male or female) may obtain a place by being fully exempt or by competing successfully in qualifying. The field is 156 players.

Since 1952 it has been home to the BUICK OPEN / Buick Invitational on the two Championship 18-hole golf courses, Torrey Pines NORTH and Torrey Pines SOUTH. However, hosting the US Open will be the most prestigious event to ever be hold at Torrey Pines.
Torrey Pines was built in 1957 by William Bell Sr. and is only the second golf course owned by the general public to ever host a U.S. OPEN Championship. A $ 3.5 million renovation that included moving several greens to increase the difficulty and length of the course was completed in 2002.
Torrey Pines will offer a spectacular view of the Pacific Ocean and surrounding bluffs at many of the holes.
The 2008 US Open Championship will be the tenth U.S. OPEN to be held in California, however, in recent history the US open has not been in California. Other than the US Open in 2000, held at Pebble Beach, it was held at the Riviera County Club in Pacific Palisades in 1948.
