Back in the year 2002, band members Isaac Slade and Joe King were schoolmates. The two met in a local guitar center where they soon began to play music together in two-man jam sessions. They enjoyed jamming with each other which led to songwriting. Soon, Zach Johnson and Slade's brother Caleb joined the band. Unfortunately, Zach Johnson left the band because of his studies. Soon after, Caleb left the band because of the tension growing between him and the band. Ben Wysocki, a talented drummer and a former band mate of Isaac Slade joined the band and became their drummer. Dave Welsh, who also happens to be a former band mate of Slade and Wysocki, was added to the band to replace Caleb. Soon after "The Fray" was born.
The band's name "The Fray" came from a suggestion bowl that was placed at a graduation party for Caleb Slade. The bands lineup was already secure and all they needed was a name. Jokes about the boys' tendency to battle it out over song composition led to the suggestion of "The Fray," and the band's name stuck into that.
