Soul Asylum is an American alternative rock band formed, under the name Loud Fast Rules, by Dan Murphy who played guitars, Karl Mueller who played bass and Dave Pirner who played drums, by 1981 in Minneapolis, Minnesota, United States. 

The band members of Soul Asylum consists of David Pirner on vocals, Dan Murphy on guitars, Tommy Stinson on bass and Michael Bland on drums.  The former members on the other hand include Karl Mueller, Pat Morley, Grant Young, Sterling Campbell and Ian Mussington. 

The founding members realized that Dave Pirner was a better guitarist than a drummer and the band name Loud Fast Rules was not quite a good name.  As a result, Dave Priner became the vocalist/rhythm guitarist and Pat Morley became the drummer.  The band’s name was also changed into Enough, which came in a dream to Dave Pirner.  Enough signed to Twin/Tone Records by 1983.  By 1984, the band released their debut album, Say What You Will, Clarence…Karl Sold The Truck, which was produced by Bob Mould.  Soon after the release of the album, Pat Morley left the band and was replaced by Grant Young.  The band had showed their full enthusiasm and outstanding talents on their second album, Made To Be Broken, which was released early in early 1986.  By 1987, Soul Asylum as Enough band signed to A&M and released Hang Time the following year.  By 1990, they had And the Horse They Rode In On, before taking a year off and jumping to Columbia Records. 

By 1992, the band released a breakthrough album, Grave Dancers Union. The success of the first two singles, Somebody to Shove and Black Gold paved the way for the blockbuster Runaway Train. The band replaced the drummer Young with Sterling Campbell, shortly after its release.  Let Your Dim Light Shine, released in 1995,received excellent reviews and reached top 6 on the album charts.  Soul Asylum released Candy From a Stranger, as their 10th full-length album, which was produced by Chris Kimsey.  A few years after, they had recorded more albums and became more successful.

Due to Soul Asylum’s stable growth as musicians, the band had an enduring success through the years.  Soul Asylum proved their worth as artist as well as their talents as musicians.  Soul Asylum always Stand Up and Be Strong as well as became Closer to the Stars as they fulfilled their dreams.
