Phish first got together and formed a band in 1983 with its original members, guitarists Trey Anastasio, Jeff Holdsworth, drummer Jon Fishman and Bassist Mike Gordon, who all met at The University of Vermont. Their first gig was on Halloween Night in a dormitory basement! Their second gig, where they first called themselves “Phish”, was only a few days later in another basement, this time beneath one of the bigger University Halls. When Phish first started, they promoted themselves as playing Grateful Dead songs. Although they had a percussionist join the band in 1984, he only stayed a few months. Then Page McConnell joined in late 1985 on keyboards. So when Holdsworth left the group after his 186 graduation, the band's lineup of today remained as “Trey, Page, Mike and Fish”. After their transfer to Goddard College in mid-1986, Phish distributed at least six different self-titled cassettes.

The band has created an extremely unique method of performing that has cemented the loyalty of their fans. For example, they created what they coined “Big Ball Jam” where each band member will throw an enormous beach ball into the audience and each time a member's ball is hit by the audience, they will play a chord or musical note. The result is that the audience literally creates their own musical piece. Another special “secret language” that Phish uses is when they will give the audience a specific musical cue, to which the audience responds with a specific response. For example, if they play a few chords from the Simpson's cartoon show, the audience will respond with “D'oh!” which is a Simpson's cartoon character's stereotyped famous line. Along with the Grateful Dead and The Beatles, Phish was one of the first bands to have a Usenet newsgroup,, which they launched in 1991. After a brief hiatus from 2004 to 2009, Phish has reunited and are better than ever! You will not want to miss their one-of-a-kind live show when Phish comes to Los Angeles .
