Born in Springfield, Ohio on December 28, 1978 as John Stephens, the artist now referred to as John Legend was born to be a musical performer. It was at the ripe age of three when John's grandmother started teaching her grandson how to play gospel piano. And play he did, because by the time the boy turned the ripe age of seven he was already performing in his church choir.
After graduating as Salutatorian from Springfield North High School at nearly the youngest age in his class, 16, John Legend went on to enroll in the University of Pennsylvania where he later graduated in 1999. It was at the U of P that John Legend focused he studies on English as well as John Stuart Mill and culture.
While in college, Legend started up a group called the Counterparts, to which he was president. The Counterparts were part jazz and part pop a cappella. They grew a fast liking to and soon enough landed the group with a spot on the 1998 Best of Collegiate a Cappella compilation.
John Legend definitely had more talent than many bands in their entirety would hope to pull in together. Though, it wasn't what he stayed focused on straight out of college. Instead, Legend took a different rout and ended up working for a consulting company in Boston, and then followed to Boston Consulting Group on over to New York City. It was in New York City that Legend got the musical bite yet again, and there is much thanks by adoring fans everywhere to this day for that move.
Soon enough John Legend was playing regularly in the nightclub scene in cities such as New York City, Philadelphia and Washington, D.C. As well, Legend started to meet some other influential music makers who he would go on to work with ad make sweet harmonies with such a his roommate Devo Springsteen and Devo's cousin, the highly talented Kanye West.
It is no surprise that John Legend has become just that, and American soulful legend. From his countless television appearances on series such as Curb Your Enthusiasm, Real Time with Bill Maher and the hilarious The Colbert Report on over to his collaborations with likewise legends such as the Black Eyed Peas, Andre 3000, The Game and T.I. to name a few.
