Initiated by Wayne Coyne, his brother Mark Coyne, and Michael Ivin’s, and drummer Richard English, the Flaming Lips recorded The Flaming Lips in 1984. After Mark Coyne left, Wayne took over, giving the Flaming Lips their signature vocals that have sustained the band for the last two-and-a-half plus decades. In the history of The Flaming Lips, seven members have left and just two have maintained the original line-up. Though they have been consistently recording and performing since 1983, The Flaming Lips did not start receiving the recognition they so deserved until the 2003 Grammy Awards when they won their first of three total and six nominations.
