When he came into the world on March 18 th , 1938 in Sledge, Mississippi, Charley Frank Pride was one of eleven children to two sharecroppers who were not doing too well. Charley Pride and his family made the best of things, and he got into playing the guitar at a young age. As well as a love of music, Charely Pride had a huge love of baseball. At a young age all little Charely Pride wanted was to play ball with the pros, and that he did. He started off pitching for the Memphis Red Sox in the Negro American League, and soon enough was signed with the Boise Yankees.
Charely Pride took a break from his baseball love just in time to head out and serve two years in the U.S. Army. After he returned, Charely Pride didn't realize that he was in no shape to play at the top of the baseball game he thought he was capable of anymore. After a few valid attempts to get back into the swing of things, Charley Pride made a smart choice when he decided to hang up the mit and pick up the mic and pick.
Many people who met Charley Pride throughout his life knew that he was destined to be on the stage and singing, making sweet country music. It took a few pushes from friends such as Red Sovine and Red Foley. Soon enough Pride was signed with RCA in the great year of 1966. No sooner did he sign the papers than he was churning out single after single. From his first single release, " Snakes Crawl at Night", to "Before I met You", and followed then by "Just Between You and Me", which set Charley Pride into country music fame and fan base. As well as reaching number nine on the charts, "Just Between You and Me" scored Charley Pride a Grammy Award for song of the year.
From being inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame in October of 2000, to being bestowed with the blessed invitation to be a part of the Grand Ole Opry, making Price the first African American in seventy years to become a regular on the show, there is no doubt about it, Charley Pride is something from a different world. A world country music fans everywhere wish more came from, because Charley Pride knows what he is doing, who he is, and how to please audiences across the globe.
