Be your own PET came together in 2003 at Orrall’s basement, which also functioned as a studio for the indie label Infinity Cat Recordings. Be your own PET started when Jake Orrall wanted to fuse his brotherhood band JEFF with Jonas Stein and Jemina Abegg. Be your own PET was officially christened when they played on their first performances at Guido's Pizza and a local coffee joint called Bongo Java. The band took their name, be your own PET, from a song by Infinity Cat label-mates Art Circus.
Be your own PET started working with producers like Jacquire King, Angelo and Robert Ellis Orrall to come up with their first ever CD “Damn Damn Leash” which was released on September of 2004, which became an instant success, even enjoying airplay on BBC Radio One. Be your own Pet’s Damn Damn Leash contains three songs namely:
- Damn Damn Leash
- Spill
- Electric Shake
Be your own PET’s Damn Damn Leash’s success spurred on the band and they followed up their first release with other singles such as Fire Department. Be your own PETS’ Fire Department was released in June of 2005 under Rough Trade Records. Be your own PET’ Fire Department was followed by the release of Extra Extra underInfinity Cat in November of 2005.Be your own PET followed this single with Let’s Get Sandy (Big Problem) in January 2006 under XL records which made the 51st spot on the UK charts. Be your own PET then released Adventure in March of 2006 under XL records which took the 36th spot on the UK charts. Be your own PET then released Bicycle, Bicycle, You Are My Bicycle in June of 2006 under XL records.
Be your own Pet also released their Summer Sensation EP on the 18th of April, 2006 under Ecstatic Peace and Infinity Cat records. Be your own PET contains five tracks namely:
- Bicycle, Bicycle
- Girls on TV
- Fire Department
- Take That Walk
- Hillmont Avenue
Be your own PET released their first full length album on the 27th of March, 2006. Be your own PET’s eponymous debut album received good reviews getting four stars from Music OMH and TheMusicZine. Be your own PET’s album is a 15-track release under XL Recordings.
