Aerosmith is the number one selling artist of all-time. With 150 million albums sold world wide, few other bands have touched on Aerosmith's level of success. The group began in 1970 with then-drummer Steven Tyler. Tired of being in bands that were sub-par, Tyler decided he wanted to front a band of his own.
It was by chance he met Joe Perry while on vacation. Joe Perry was already in a band with Tom Hamilton. Hamilton and Perry moved to Boston together in 1969. It was there they met Berklee College of Music pupil, Joey Kramer. Kramer, on a note of rare coincidence, already knew of Steven Tyler and was anxious to play with him. A year later the four of them met and decided to form a band.
Rumor has it no one could come up with a name. Kramer used to scribble the word "Aerosmith" all over his notebooks and the name stuck. That same year Tyler brought on childhood friend Ray Tabano to play rhythm guitar. Tabano did not stay with the group long and in the fall of 1971 was replaced by Brad Whitford. The five of them have stood as the original Aerosmith line-up for all but five of their forty years together.
Aerosmith began aggressively writing and performing together, and in 1972 landed a record deal with Columbia Records. Their first album, Aerosmith, was soon to follow, selling 2 million copies to date. Their second album Get Your Wings was their first multi-platinum album and has sold 3 million copies since its release.
Aerosmith is now working on their 15 th album, some forty years later, but it was their third album that shot them into the spotlight of national stardom. Toys in the Attic delivered three singles to make it on the Top 40 list; the first of many high-ranking singles to be released.
Aerosmith has received many honors in their time together. Among them are a combined 30+ awards from prestigious music awards associations around the world, as well as being inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2001. Aerosmith was also honored with working closely with the developers of Guitar Hero, which released on June 29, 2008 and allows many gamers and fans alike to become interactively involved with some of their greatest hits.
