Founded in 1976 in Dublin , Ireland , U2 began with a simple ad, posted by a high-school student looking to start a band under his name. Larry Mullen, U2's award-winning drummer, immediately recruited Bono, Clayton, The Edge, and three others that are no longer with U2, and thus, their musical ventures began.
Within two years U2 had earned enough money in competitions and talent shows to fund their own demo. They released their first single in Ireland in 1979; not bad for a band just three years into their career! It wasn't long before U2 gained notoriety outside of Ireland . The following year they released their first over-seas single, “11 0'Clock Tick Tock”, and that same year they released their first album, “Boy”.
Since 1980, U2 has released 12 albums, their latest being No Line on the Horizon. They have won 22-Grammy's, tied only with Stevie Wonder in quantity. In addition to their Grammy's, U2 has won awards in Britain as well as other countries, including seven BRIT awards. In 2005 U2 was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, marking their place forever in musical history.
Since their formation, U2 has always been actively involved in raising awareness for a variety of issues. The number of causes is truly countless, and range from ending famine in various countries to ending third-world debt. Their involvement has earned them the respect of a number of presidents and leaders worldwide, making their influence stretch much further beyond that of just music.
