The college football program of the Virginia Cavaliers was formed in 1888. Fans with Virginia Cavaliers tickets see the team wear the colors navy blue and orange. The 1888 squad had 11 members plus a substitute. The team originally wore the colors red and gray, but changed it to blue and orange the following year. The Virginia Cavaliers football team would join its first league in 1894, after joining the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Association. From 1900 to 1915, the Virginia Cavaliers changed head coaches for a total of 10 times, enjoying 10 winning seasons during the period. This is due mainly to players such as quarterback Robert Gooch and Eugene N. Meyer.
In 1915, the Cavaliers managed a feat that no other southern team was able to achieve before. The Cavaliers managed to defeat the Yale University Bulldogs, who were very dominant during those times. The Virginia Cavaliers were led by Norborne Berkeley and Buck Mayer to win a 10-0 contest against the Bulldogs. The athletic aspirations of the Cavaliers, however, would be halted for a period of time, from 1917 to 1918, because of World War I. The football team of the University of Virginia resumed operations in 1919. The University of Virginia’s football team officially adopted the name “Cavaliers” in 1923. In their first year as the Virginia Cavaliers, they suffered a season record of 3-5-1. This would be the last unsuccessful season that they would suffer for the next four seasons, as they would enjoy winning seasons from 1924 to 1927, before suffering again a record of 2-6-1 in 1928. Despite their successful seasons from 1924 to 1927, students were not particularly supportive of the team, and Virginia Cavaliers tickets were not very successful. This eventually led to the resignation of Coach Earle "Greasy" Neale after the 1928 season.
Earl Neale was replaced by Earl Abell as the Virginia Cavaliers football team’s head coach after he resigned. Earl Abell served a 2-year tenure as the head coach of the football team. Abell would eventually be succeeded by Fred Dawson in 1931. Dawson was an enthusiastic coach, but his spirits were somewhat dampened because of the continued weak support that the football team experienced and the lack of athletic scholarships. Dawson eventually resigned after 1933 and was replaced by Gus Tebell.
The Virginia Cavaliers eventually resigned from the Southern Conference so that they could grant athletic scholarships, which the conference did not allow. However, the Cavaliers struggled to attain success, and Coach Tebell eventually quit after suffering three losing seasons. He was replaced by Frank Murray in 1937, but the latter was unable to produce a different result during the first year of his tenure, ending the season with a record of 2-7. Despite the initial struggle, fans with Virginia Cavaliers tickets saw their team win the state championship in 1938 with a record of 4-4-1.
The 40’s produced some of the best college football players from the University of Virginia. The Virginia Cavaliers produced “Bullet Bill” Dudley, who is considered to be the best football player that the University of Virginia has ever produced. They had a win-loss record of 4-5 in 1940, but rebounded to 8-1 in 1941. Due to World War II, The Virginia Cavaliers suffered a record of 2-6-1, due to the conscription of soldiers for the war. Frank Murray eventually retired in 1945, and was replaced by Art Guepe. Guepe would hold the head coach job for seven years. Art Guepe would lead the team to 7 years with winning records, much to the delight of the team’s supporters with Virginia Cavaliers tickets .

The Virginia Cavaliers officially joined the Atlantic Coast Conference on the 4th of December, 1953. This was after an intense argument between Athletic Director Gus Tebell, who was in favor of the move, and President Darden. Tebell eventually came ahead in the arguments with the support of the Board of Visitors.
The Virginia Cavaliers would eventually hire George Welsh as the team’s head coach in 1982. Welsh would lead the Cavaliers to a number of feats that the team was never able to achieve before. During his tenure, fans with Virginia Cavaliers tickets saw the Cavaliers enjoy their first 10-win season in 1989, as well as the team’s first ACC Championship. It was during Welsh’s tenure that a player of the Virginia Cavaliers was unanimously chosen All-America in 1985, in the person of offensive tackle Jim Dombrowski. George Walsh also led the team to their first number 1 ranking in 1990, which they held for 3 weeks. George Walsh retired in 2000, at the age of 67, citing health reasons.
