More than 25,000 Louisville Cardinals fans braved wind chills in the single digits and saw the Louisville Cardinals jump out to a 10-3 lead early in the second quarter. Sophomore quarterback Dave Ragone allied with little-used wide receiver, Damien Dorsey, on a 58-yard scoring play and got three more from the right foot of placekicker Nate Smith. The Rams battled back late in the first half receiving a pair of touchdowns on the ground from Cecil Sapp and Frank Rice. Sapp would go on to earn game MVP honors after a 160-yard presentation. Armed with a 16-10 halftime lead, the Rams would bump the score to 19-10 after the second of three C.W. Hurst field goals, a 21-yarder early in the third quarter.
The Louisville Cardinals pulled within two at 19-17 when Ragone joined with Deion Branch on a 14-yard scoring play with 13:35 left in the game. For the day, Ragone completed 24 of 37 throws for 321 yards in winds up to 30 miles per hour. Branch set a Liberty Bowl record with 10 receptions for 170 yards and a score. The Louisville Cardinals outgained CSU 397-315 in total offense but proved to be their own worst opponent by fumbling three times on the resentfully frigid afternoon. Louisville Cardinals closed the scoring with a 32-yard Hurst field goal with 7:43 remaining as the Cardinals were compulsory to play the final 15 minutes into the teeth of the howling winds.
