Clemson University in South Carolina was founded in 1889; formerly a military college and presently classified by the Carnegie Foundation as a Doctoral/Research University-Extensive, a category of less than 4 percent of all universities in America. It is a member of the NCAA’s Division 1 and is in the Atlantic Division of the Atlantic Coast Conference. The Clemson Tigers was born in 1986, when Football Coach Walter Riggs of Auburn University brought with him the Tiger nickname and the color orange. The Tiger Paw logo, with a tell-tale hook at the bottom of the paw that shows the official licensed trademark for the university from a mold of a Bengal Tiger in the St. Louis Zoo, was created in 1970 and developed by the Henderson Advertising Agency of Greenville, South Carolina.

The Clemson Tigers have nineteen athletic teams. Eleven of them are from men’s sports such as football, basketball, baseball, soccer, tennis, golf, track and field (indoor and outdoor), cross country, and swimming and diving. In women’s sports, there are basketball, soccer, tennis, volleyball, track and field (indoor and outdoor), cross country, swimming, and diving and rowing.

Home to the Clemson Tigers men football team is the sports ground of Frank Howard Field, the memorial stadium popularly known by its nickname “Death Valley”. The stadium, with an 80,301 seating capacity is one of the ten largest on-campus stadiums in the United States, and is the second largest in the Atlantic Coast Conference. Its surface is a natural grass. The stadium has been expanded across the years, since it was built in 1940. In 2004, an expansion of the west side of the stadium began. Other facilities dedicated to the teams are Little John Arena for the men’s and women’s basketball team, Doug Kingsmore Stadium for Clemson's men's baseball team, and Rigg Fields for men's and women's soccer teams.

Clemson Tigers has the highest record of 13 championships among ACC schools and has won 3 Southern Conference titles prior its inclusion in ACC. Of the 28 bowl games that the program has participated in through the years, it has captured 15 wins. In 1981, the team went into the school’s history after winning the National Championship.

On the same year Clemson Tigers finished 12-0 and ranked #1 in the Associated Press and Coaches polls. That same year however, due to recruiting infractions such as giving of money, cars and other inappropriate offers to players on that team from 1977 to 1982, NCAA placed Clemson Tigers on three years probation.

Noted coaches in Clemson Tigers football history are:

• John Heisman (also coached at Akron, Auburn, Georgia Tech, Penn, Washington & Jefferson, and Rice)

• Jess Neely, Frank Howard (whom the playing field at Death Valley is named after), and Danny Ford. Tommy Bowden, son of famed coach Bobby Bowden, is the current head coach for the Tigers.

The Clemson Tigers football team is indeed one of the great teams of the Clemson University. Through the years, the team of Clemson Tigers had shown their potentials as a strong and striving football athletic team.

The Clemson Tigers Football team has also earned numerous accomplishments. These are the following:

• Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Association Championship during the years of 1900 and 1902 (co-champion).

This mascot and the tradition of football itself in Clemson was brought in by Walter Merritt Riggs in 1896. The Tigers are without a doubt one of the most powerful teams on the field today and they have a steady history of winning behind them. The Tigers have no less than 13 conference championships to their name, 2 southern conference titles, 1 national championship and an astonishing 15 bowl victories. The Tigers have a long-standing rivalry with the South Carolina Gamecocks- though this rivalry extends to other sports as well it is most prominent in their annual football game.
