Tangerine Bowl Game History:
For over half a century the Tangerine Bowl has been a steadfast part of Florida 's history. Though it has undergone several name and location changes, the Tangerine Bowl Game itself remains the same important part of college football culture. Each year the Tangerine Bowl takes place at 1:00PM Eastern time on New Years Day. It is one of the oldest of the Bowl games, dating back to 1947, something only two other Bowl Games in the nation can share that fact with. Now called the Capital One Bowl, it was called the Tangerine Bowl from 1947 until 1982.
The Citrus Bowl was almost chosen to host the fifth BCS game, but due to the buildings condition, was bypassed. However, as a result of this snub, Orange County voted in favor of spending $1.1 billion on a new Orlando Magic building and performing arts center, as well as extensive upgrades to the Citrus Bowl.
The Tangerine Bowl games are rich with tradition that is so much more than just a Big Ten Conference game. Every year there is a “Mascot of the Year Contest” where football fans are integrated into voting of their favorite college mascot. The winning university receives $10,000 as well as a special appearance on ABC.
The Tangerine Bowl Game also gives out an MVP award, often awarding two players with this special honor, given at the conclusion of the Bowl Game. For your chance to partake in these exciting traditions check out our site for 2011 tickets today!
