Sun Bowl Information

The 2006 Sun Bowl was one of the great events in the year of 2006. The Sun Bowl tickets were abundantly sold to 48,732 supporters and college football fans. The game that was held in Sun Bowl Stadium of El Paso, Texas was a match-up between great college football teams comprised of Missouri Tigers of the University of Missouri-Columbia and Oregon State Beavers of Oregon State University.

The Missouri Tigers scored first during the first quarter with Tony Temple who rushed to the left for 7 yard gain. However, for the Oregon State Beavers; Matt Moore passed to Sammie Stroughter down the middle for 3 yard gain that resulted to a 7-7 score. This was followed by Matt Moore of Oregon State Beavers’ Matt Moore who rushed up the middle for a one yard gain that resulted to a score of 14-7, with the Beavers as the leading scorer.

During the third quarter of the 2006 Sun Bowl, Matt Moore had a touchdown pass to Joe Newton down the middle for 29 yard gain, with the score of 21-17, in favor of the Oregon State Beavers. On the other hand, as the competing team of the 2006 Sun Bowl, Chase Coffman passed to Tommy Saunders down the middle for 29-yard gain that gave the Tigers a leading score of 21-24. During the third quarter, Tommie Saunders' 29-yard touchdown catch from tight end, Chase Coffman off a lateral gave the lead back to Missouri and Temple's 65-yard untouched touchdown run seemingly put the Tigers in control at 31-21 with 5:58.

Matt Moore threw four touchdown passes and ran for a fifth for Oregon State, which helped create the second-highest scoring game in the history of Sun Bowl in 73 years. Matt Moore was 5-for-7 for 55 yards on the winning drive, set up after Sammie Stroughter's 38-yard punt return to the Oregon State 46. The Oregon State succeeded despite a porous defense that allowed 98 points the last three games. Among Missouri's other big plays were a 40-yard catch by Coffman that led to Temple's 7-yard scoring run on the opening drive. A 47-yard run by Temple was followed by an 18-yard touchdown pass from Daniel to Coffman on the next play for a 38-24 lead with 12:08 left in the game.

The Sun Bowl was initially played on January 1935, as a fund-raising event for a local service club, to help underprivileged children and to finance improvements to the El Paso High School Stadium. The Sun Bowl has grown into El Paso's number one national attraction and is second only to the Rose Bowl in longevity. On October 1934, at a meeting of the El Paso Kiwanis Club, Dr. Brice Schuller recommended that the club sponsor a football game on New Year's Day, matching an El Paso High School All-Star Team against a valuable opponent. The motion was passed commonly. It was decided to ask for public suggestions as to the name of this yearly game, and the name "Sun Bowl" was chosen by Dr. C. M. Hendricks, who turned out to be the first Sun Bowl Association president. The following year, a week-long schedule of events was added to the Sun Bowl celebrations, and four other local service clubs joined the Kiwanis in coordinating the whole "Sun Carnival" calendar. In 1936, New Mexico State and Hardin-Simmons were welcomed to play, and the Sun Bowl has been a college game ever since.

Over the years, many great collegiate stars who went on to memorable football careers in both the college and professional ranks have contributed in the Sun Bowl. Some of these athletes include Ara Parseghian, Merlin Olsen, Tony Dorsett, Barry Sanders, Billy Stevens, Charlie Johnson and Jesse Whittenton. Another well-known Sun Bowl participant was Burt Reynolds, who was a member of the 1955 Florida State team.
