Sun Bowl Game History:
The Sun Bowl game has been playing in El, Paso Texas since October, 1934. Its age is in-sync with the Rose Bowl, Sugar Bowl, and Orange Bowl. Currently sponsored by Brut as of 2006, the Brut Sun Bowl takes a Pac-10 Conference team and plays them against a Big 12 conference team, a Big East conference team, or Notre Dame. The Sun Bowl chooses their teams at the same time as the Gator Bowl, and each year the Sun Bowl and the Gator Bowl trade-off who gets first pick of the teams.
Last year the Sun Bowl hosted Oregon State and Pittsburgh . Oregon State won the Sun Bowl 3-0. Victor Strong-Butler, the Defensive End for Oregon State , earned the C.M. Hendrick's MVP Award for that game, Greg Romeus, the Defensive End for Pittsburgh , earned the Jimmy Rogers, Jr. MVP Lineman award, and Johnny Hekker, the Punter for Oregon State, earned the John Folmer's MVP Special Teams Player award.
El Paso Sun Bowl Stadium Background and Information:
El Paso 's Sun Bowl Stadium opened in 1963 at a cost of $275,000. It is an outdoor football stadium located at the University of Texas . In the 1950's, the city of El Paso donated the land for the stadium to the University of Texas because the Universities previous stadium could only accommodate 15,000 people. That donation led to a doubled capacity until 1982, at which time another 20,000 seats were added to reach its current seating capacity of 51,500.
The Sun Bowl Stadium has hosted the Brut Sun Bowl since it opened. It is the closest stadium in America to a foreign country, sitting less than a half mile from the Rio Grande River and the Mexican City of Jaurez.
