Sugar Bowl Information

First played in Tulane Stadium on Jan. 1, 1935, the Sugar Bowl typically featured the SEC champion in its early years. That was formalized through an contract with the conference during the 1946 season, which carried on through the 1994 season. In 1975, the Sugar Bowl moved to the new Louisiana Superdome, becoming the first (and still the only) main bowl game played indoors.

The Sugar Bowl in 1987 also turned out to be the first major bowl game to accept corporate sponsorship, under an agreement with USF&G Financial Services, which continued through 1995. Nokia cellular telephones of Finland have sponsored the Sugar Bowl game since 1996.

As a member of the Bowl Alliance and Bowl Championship Series, the Sugar Bowl currently hosts one of the top three post-season match ups. On Jan. 3, 2000, the Sugar Bowl hosted the second yearly championship game played under the auspices of the BCS. The 1930s set the stage for the Sugar Bowl as the first classic was played on New Year's Day in 1935 between Tulane University and Temple University. The Green Wave beat the Owls 20-14. The opening Classic was a hit, and in 1936 the Sugar Bowl enlarged Tulane Stadium by 14,000 seats to a capacity of 38,000.

World War II took center stage during the 1940s, but the Sugar Bowl Classic continued. In 1942, the Bowl played host to the East-West Shrine game as the annual contest was moved away from San Francisco as a wartime safety measure. Named after the Sugar Bowl's first president, the Warren V. Miller Trophy was created to recognize the Classic's most wonderful football player. Texas All-American Bobby Layne was the award's first receiver.
