New Mexico Bowl Game History:
The New Mexico Bowl played its inaugural game at the University Stadium in 2006. ESPN loaned the stadium $2 million to fund the event and it was broadcast by ESPN's regional television division. It matches a team from the NCAA's Mountain West and Western Athletic Conferences.
The first game ever hosted New Mexico Lobos against the San Jose Sate Spartans. The Spartans won 20-12. In line wth New Mexico 's culture, the prize is a 20-inch tall Zia Pueblo trophy painted with Pueblo symbols, the New Mexico Bowl logo, as well as the logos of the teams playing, as well as football players. The New Mexico Bowl MVP awards are made of leather shields, a tradition in Zia Pueblo culture.
In the second game, New Mexico beat Nevada in an unprecedented 23-0 victory. Last year Colorado State beat Fresno State 40 to 35. University of New Mexico Stadium Background and Information:
Built in 1960, University Stadium is the annual host to the New Mexico Bowl as well as the New Mexico Lobos. It is owned and operated by the University of New Mexico . The New Mexico Bowl is a new tenant, moving its location to the recently renovated and expanded University Stadium in 2006. The expansions have continued since 2001 and have included an additional 5,000 seats, a tunnel leading to the Tow Diehm facility, portable bleachers, and new bathrooms and concession stands.
Today the University Stadium is primed for the optimal College Bowl Game experience. Its new additions have made it a universal entertainment venue, from local UNM football games to sold-out concerts to world-wide soccer matches.
