The previous season of the Motor City Bowl featured a fantastic college football game. The 2006 Motor City Bowl was played by the Central Michigan University and the Middle Tennessee University.

As the Middle Tennessee Blue Raiders struggled to obtain the Motor City Bowl title through their defense, the Chippewas were able to extend their lead to 28-7 at the start of the third quarter of the Motor City Bowl. However, the Blue Raiders opened the second half with possession and were looking to get back into the game but Clint Marks' pass intended for Desmond Gee was intercepted by linebacker Doug Kress, who returned the miscue 56 yards for a score. The 56-yard interception return was a Motor City Bowl record. The Blue Raiders continued to struggle as Desmond Gee returned a punt 39 yards to the 14. DeMarco McNair sprinted up the middle for a 4-yard touchdown run four plays later, Smith's point after cut the lead to 28-14; with 11:32 remaining in the Motor City Bowl. Rick Albreski missed a 33-yard field goal to the left on Central Michigan's next possession and the Blue Raiders took back over at the 20 with less than seven minutes left. The final attempt at a comeback win ended when DeMarco McNair was stopped short of a first down on a fourth-and-1 attempt at the 29. Central Michigan Chippewas put the final touches on its bowl victory when Rick Albreski came back with a 43-yard field goal with 3:22 left. The Central Michigan obtained a 31-14 victory over the Middle Tennessee for the 2006 season of the Motor City Bowl.

Fans and supporters were thrilled as the Motor City Bowl game ended. The Blue Raiders finished the Motor City Bowl with 320 yards total offense. The defense held the Chippewas to 311 yards total offense and the unit allowed just one touchdown in the final three quarters to give Middle Tennessee a realistic shot at coming back to win the Motor City Bowl.

The Motor City Bowl is a major post-season college football bowl game certified by the NCAA that has been played annually since 1997. The first five games (1997-2001) were played at the Pontiac Silverdome in Pontiac, Michigan. Starting in 2002, the venue was moved to 65,000-seat Ford Field in Detroit, Michigan. The game features a team from the Mid-American Conference playing one from the Big Ten Conference. Kentucky won 79-74. Ford Field will be the host of the Super Bowl XL, which will be played on February 5, 2008. It will also host the 2009 college basketball Final Four championship.
