2011 AutoZone Liberty Bowl Game History:
The Liberty Bowl has taken place annually since 1959, first in Atlantic City , New Jersey then in Memphis , Tennessee in 1964. The first Liberty Bowl was the only cold weather Bowl game of its time. However, low attendance helped urge the move to Memphis .

It matches the Conference USA to the Southeastern Conference. Each year from 1959 until 2007, the game was played in December. However, as of 2008 it has taken place January 2 nd . Previously the Liberty Bowl was sponsored by AXA Financial. Since 2004 it has been sponsored by AutoZone, changing the name to the AutoZone Liberty Bowl.

In last years Liberty Bowl, the Kentucky Wildcats beat East Carolina Pirates 25 to 19. It marked the 50 th anniversary of the Liberty Bowl. The MVP of the game was Defensive Tackle Ventrell Jenkins of Kentucky ,

Memphis Memorial Stadium Background and Information:
The Liberty Bowl Memorial Stadium is located at the Mid-South Fairgrounds. It was built in 1965 at an initial cost of $3.7 million. 1987 renovations added another $19.5 million to its construction costs.

Originally, the stadium was lopsided, with the SW side taller than the NE. The expansion in 1987 brought balance to the stadium, as well as an increased seating capacity of 62,380. It was originally called the Memphis Memorial Stadium, being dedicated to veterans of WWI, WWII, and the Korean War. It was renamed again in 1983 when beloved Football coach Rex Dockery died in a plane crash. Because the AutoZone is the official sponsor, the name has now been the AutoZone Liberty Bowl.
