Independence Bowl Game History:
Since 1976, the Independence Bowl has been a crucial part of Louisiana 's College Bowl culture. In its first five years the Southland Conference would choose the host team for the event. When that ended in 1981, the Independence Bowl was allowed to choose Division I-A ranked teams instead. As a result, the first Southeast Conference Team and Big-Eight teams were to be the playing pool for Shreveport 's Independence Bowl.

In 2006 the Independence Bowl partnered up with PetroSun, making for the Bowl's fourth sponsor in its then-thirty year history. Soon after the new sponsorship kicked in, 45,000 fans piled into the Independence Bowl Stadium to watch the Alabama Crimson Tide lose to the Oklahoma State Cowboys 34-31. It as an incredibly close game for the duration, until a field goal scored in the last nine seconds broke the tie and gave the Cowboys the winning lead.

Last year Alabama beat Colorado 30 to 24 before an attendance of 47,043 fans.

Shreveport Louisiana Independence Stadium Background and Information:
The Independence Stadium in Shrevport was built in 1925. As one of the more classic stadiums in Louisiana , it has undergone extensive renovations on average every twenty years since its opening, the most recent of which took place in 2001. Formerly known as the State Fair Stadium, it has been the host of the Independence Bowl since 1976, originally called the Bicentennial Bowl.
