Humanitarian Bowl Information

Dirk Koetter now heads south with back-to-back Humanitarian Bowl victories under his belt. In his final game as Boise State coach, Koetter guided the Broncos to a 38-23 victory on their home field over Texas-El Paso as All-American quarterback Bart Hendricks accounted for four touchdowns.

Koetter, who will take over at Arizona State next year, produced a 26-10 record in three seasons at the helm with Boise State (10-2), including last year's 34-31 Humanitarian Bowl victory over Louisville and today's win against the Miners (8-4). The Broncos had never appeared in a postseason game before 1999, but the fourth-year Humanitarian Bowl has become a holiday home of the Big West Conference champion. Utah State and Idaho were the league's first two representatives.

This year's game, as predicted, became a showcase for Hendricks, a senior from Reno, Nevada, who was a finalist for the Unitas Trophy and led the nation in passing efficiency this season, throwing for 3,364 yards and 35 TDs. He opened the scoring by hitting Jay Swillie for a 28-yard touchdown just 1:52 into the contest and capped the afternoon with an 11-yard TD strike to Andre Banks. In between scoring runs of 12 and 77 yards.

Hendricks, a two-time Big West Player of the Year, completed 16-of-28 passes for 240 yards and ran for another 57 yards en route to game Most Valuable Player honors. Ricky Bishop had touchdown runs of 28, 43 and 47 yards for the Miners, who are without a bowl victory since 1967 and were making their first postseason appearance in 12 years. UTEP fought back from an early 10-0 deficit to tie it on Bishop's 28-yard touchdown run with just over four minutes left in the first half. But Hendricks' 12-yard scoring run with 23 seconds to go before halftime put the Broncos ahead for good.

On the first possession after the break, Hendricks took a keeper left and cut into the open field, scampering 77 yards for a touchdown and a 24-10 Boise State advantage. Brock Forsey's 42-yard scoring run on the second play of the fourth quarter immediately following a successful fake punt pushed the lead to 31-13. Chris Porter had 134 rushing yards for UTEP. The game-time tempature was near the freezing mark, which might have affected the Miners, who play most of their games in warm weather.
