Fiesta Bowl is considered as one of the longest running bowl games in the United States. The bowl game started to operate in 1971 that featured the great game of Arizona State versus Florida State. Arizona won the game by 45-38 that was seen by a crowd of 51,098. During the first years of Fiesta Bowl, it hosted the Western Athletic Conference champions from 1971 to 1978. In 1977, the bowl was able to accumulate an attendance of 57,727 in a game played by Penn State as the winning team versus Arizona State, 42-30.

However, Arizona as well as the Arizona State both joined the Pac-10 Conference in 1978 and it ended the tie-in with the Western Athletic Conference of the Fiesta Bowl. By 1987, the Fiesta Bowl featured its first national championship game between Miami and Penn State. The 1987 Fiesta Bowl that was attended by 73,098 fans and supporters was won by Penn State and was considered as the most watched college football bowl game. The success of the Fiesta Bowl continued during the 1990s. In fact, it was considered as a major bowl and was included as one of the three top games. The Fiesta Bowl featured the exciting game of Tennessee and Florida State in the 1999 BCS National Championship Game. Tennessee won the game defeating Florida State with 23-16.

From 1986 to 1992, Sunkist sponsored the Fiesta Bowl which was followed by IBM from 1993 up to 1995. In 2001, Fiesta Bowl featured another exciting game between Oregon State and Notre Dame in front of the third largest crowd in the history of Fiesta. It successfully obtained an attendance of 75,428 that ended with a 41-9 victory of the Oregon State. By 2003, the Fiesta Bowl featured the double overtime game of Miami Hurricanes and Ohio State Buckeyes. The Buckeyes won the game by 31-24 that made Craig Krenzel and Mike Doss the MVPs.
