Tony Temple's Performance
Tony Temple broke a 54-year-old Cotton Bowl record by rushing for 281 yards on 24 carries and another by scoring four touchdowns. And he broke both records on the same play a 41-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter against a surrendering Razorback defense that seemed to furnish an escort service rather than a tackling obstacle.
Temple broke the Cotton Bowl record of 265 rushing yards by Rice's Dicky Maegle that includes a touchdown famous in college football lore. On many of Temple runs, which was off a basic counter dive out of the spread, Temple rambled 10 to 20 yards before he encountered resistance. All had modest games (105 yards on 21 carries for McFadden, 45 yards on 10 carries for Jones, 12 of 29 with one interception for 136 yards for Daniel.
